Architect Sean Griffiths visited Weymouth in September 2011 to look at the peninsula site. Sean is a visiting professor at Yale University and one of the UK's most respected architects whose practice, called FAT, transformed the BBC’s studios in Cardiff. He told me,
“Weymouth, like many British seaside towns has enormous untapped potential which with the right vision could transform the town. I believe, that whilst commercial imperatives are important in realising the potential, the examples of Whitstable, Morecambe and Folkestone, show what a more creative approach to seaside regeneration can bring.I very much hope that Weymouth has the vision to recognise the potential for the more lateral approach to regeneration that could be explored through the proposed charrette [definition: a series of meetings involving all stakeholders to produce a master plan], and whose results could lead to long term benefits in sustainability, culture and ultimately commercial value.
The town itself has its own unique qualities and the peninsula site has spectacular possibilities, with huge potential benefits for the town and its community, if the right, imaginative and long-term approach can be adopted.”
