Sociocultural competence is how one understands the aspects of cultures such as a cultures beliefs, values, language, and rituals. Translanguaging is a way for students to understand their own cultures and gain a deeper understanding of other cultures use their language and celebrate their culture in a variety of ways.
Quinceañera Webquest
The webquest displays the purpose of sociocultural competence through students learning about a cultural event for many Spanish-speaking countries, La Quinceañera. The webquest provides multimodal texts through videos and articles in both English and Spanish. Students gain sociocultural competence in this individual activity by learning about the history of quinceañeras, the typical events of the celebration, and how they would plan their own quince. Students also make comparisons between the typical american 'Sweet 16' and a traditional 'Quinceañera'.

Menù Italiano
During an Italian Food unit, students are given various examples of typical Italian foods throughout the meals of the day (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Dessert). The students are provided presentations on the meals of the day and the foods that are authentically Italian. During the unit we also discuss Italian-american foods and the differences between authentic European Italian cuisine as opposed to Italian-American cuisine. For a final project, students create an Italian Menu in Italian and English of dishes they would serve on a menu. The students are encouraged to incorporate both Italian, American, or their own backgrounds cuisines onto the menu. Linked here are the instructions for the assignment.
