Metalinguistic awareness is one's knowledge of how language works such as syntax, grammar, vocabulary, and phonetics. Creating purposeful design supports students' learning as well as their metalinguistic awareness (Hamman et al., 2018).
Italian Pronunciation Powerpoint
One aspect of metalinguistic awareness is the knowledge of phonetics of a language. In this powerpoint, the content displays various letter formations and sounds in the Italian language. Italian words that demonstrate these pronunciations are provided as examples. The teacher says aloud each term while students respond back as a group to practice their pronunciation. This activity provides metalinguistic awareness regarding the differences between letter combinations and how they sound in Italian versus English. To further extend this practice, students can be grouped into pairs and alternate repetitions of the words provided.
Definite Articles Activity & Resources
As a foreign language teacher, grammar is a major component of language acquisition in my class. An exploratory unit taught to my Spanish students is using definite articles. The notes below are provided to the students as a resource to use while practicing changing words from singular to plural form in the target language. At first, we complete this process together. The practice activity shown here is one of the many used throughout the unit where students are completing individually or in pairs. In this activity, students must change the singular term into the plural form in Spanish and then provide a translation of the plural form in English. By having students differentiate between artículos defenidos in Spanish and English, they can make linguistic connections/comparisons regarding the grammar used in each language.
