In order to process new information and deepen/extend learning through translanguaging, students can annotate and respond to texts in various languages. The examples below highlight how students can learn bilingually to make connections of the languages that are used. In a foreign language setting, this will deepen students understanding of the target language while allowing them to use English to explain what they have learned (Hamman-Ortiz & Hesson, 2023).
Biografía Activity - In this activity, students are given a brief article in Spanish about a famous hispanic person. While reading the article in small groups, students will annotate the text. Students will underline cognates and translate any words or phrases that they can. Then, students will answer questions about the biography in English to explain what they have learned in more detail. This process will allow students to deepen their understanding of Spanish, as well as make linguistic connections between Spanish and English.
Herencia Hispana Powerpoint
Content - The powerpoint is presented to the class as a whole group. As shown, there is a overview and history of El Mes de la Herencia Hispana, presented en español. The teacher explains each slide aloud in Spanish and uses gestures and synonyms in English to ensure student comprehension. Then, as a class, the various videos of hispanohablante famosos are shown. The videos are varied between Spanish-speaking songs and short bios in English.

Process - Students will individually research a hispanohablante famoso. They must research online through multimodal texts (YouTube videos, articles, pictures) about their assigned hispanohablante. For their assessment, they will create a biography utilizing both English and Spanish to create for the classroom bulletin, where all the student's biographies will be displayed.
