Menu wars is a competition between 2 teams, which was seniors vs juniors. We all had a couple weeks to perfect our recipe in and out of class. I took advantage of the time and I made cesar salad at home. I loved menu wars and I think this should happen every year. Our team name was passport because we have food from all around the world.
Ceasar salad that I did at home to practice
When our team was discussing what dishes we were gonna do, there was a salad option. It didn't seem like anyone wanted to do it, and I love making this ceasar salad, so I said that I'd do it. It was a super easy choice for me. The recipe is my Moms, but I tweaked it to how I thought was better. I used less olive oil and anchovy paste, but I used more lemon juice and black pepper.
plating sketch
Round 1: Cesar salad
Use a decent amount less of olive oil
No anchovies, but I should use anchovy (Only a little though)
Too much dressing
I think it went well
I have enough time to make a salad
Jaron said that it had too much olive oil, and I agree
Round 2: Croutons
I made the croutons for display and taste. I added too much seasoning (especially salt).
A lot of my classmates tried the croutons and they all said they had too much seasoning.
My role in the menu wars felt like I was bringing energy to the team and getting everyone excited. I think that my dish helped us because some of the judges liked it, so I go some points. I brought out other peoples dishes and I helped clean some.
My growth as a cook has grown exponentially, I used to only be able to pan sear an already cooked chicken cutlet. Now I'm making them from scratch and I've learned how to make many other things. As a food writer, I've learned a bunch of new techniques that I can use throughout my whole life. Menu wars taught me to get my dish made on time, and how to write about the dishses I've made.
