Travel Tips

Visiting Anchorage

Anchorage is a beautiful city and we look forward to welcoming you! At 61°13′N, Anchorage is just slightly north of Lillehammer, Norway, so our climate is perfect for your beautiful Norse garb!

If you're interested in extending your trip, Anchorage is a great jumping off point for the broader south-central Alaskan region. It's an easy day trip north to Talkeetna or south to Girdwood or the Kenai Peninsula.

Getting here

Our local airport is the Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC). ANC is served by a number of national carriers, including Alaska Airlines, Delta, and United with connections to other regional carriers via Seattle-Tacoma (SEA-TAC).

Tickets to Alaska from the San Francisco Bay Area run around $400 in the winter and about $350 from Seattle, but better deals can be obtained if you plan ahead.

An important caveat: There is only one public airport in Anchorage. This means that buying tickets early will ensure better prices and more options. Wait too long and you'll be stuck on the milk run (you don't want this, especially in November).

Use a comparison service like Google Flights or Kayak to find the best fare!

The tl;dr of travel to Alaska is plan early, do not wait until the last minute.

Lodging

Anchorage has some great hotels and other places to stay. November is our off season, so rates are lower (yay!), right now, rooms average around $100/night (with fancier hotels running around $160/night). We are working on getting a group rate to help keep costs under control. There are also a number of AirBnB type options as well as crash space as its available.

In town transportation

We're working on some solutions to assist travelers with in town transportation. There are car rentals available, and driving in town isn't a big deal (so long as you remember basic physics).

Weather and Winter

Anchorage has a subarctic, maritime climate. We are typically protected from deep cold snaps our proximity to the ocean and from strong winds by the Chugach mountains (though this isn't always true) Average temps in November are highs around 28°F and lows around 17°F, average humidity in November sits around 74%. The last few years have been warmer than average, with temperatures in the 30°F - 35°F range.

At the event, we will need to spend part of the day outside to allow the table staff to set up the hall for the náttverðr. Please plan to have appropriate (warm) outerwear.

If you're used to colder temps, November is vests and hats weather. If you're not used to cold weather, you'll want a good coat and hat and gloves. Unless you're planning to hit the back-country, you won't need snow pants or bunny boots.

Daylight

Some of you may have seen 30 Days of Night, I assure you that much of this movie is fictional (we don't even have sheriffs). Sunrise in early November 2021, will take place at 08:45 and sunset will take place at 16:39, with civil twilight extending until 17:29. The sun will reach a height of approximately 12 degrees above the horizon. For the curious, this is almost exactly the same amount of light experienced in Heiðabýr on the winter solstice.
