The Setting

On November 6, 2021, we will gather in Anchorage, Alaska and step back in time to the tenth century and around the world to the southern Jutland peninsula. The tenth century was a time of cultural shift in Denmark. Christianity was introduced and in 965, Harald Bluetooth raised the larger Jelling Stone, taking credit for the unification of Denmark and conversion of the Danes to Christianity. Wars with the Holy Roman Empire's Ottonian Dynasty saw the southern border of Denmark move north and south over the course of the century and Danish expeditionary forces besieged Paris and settled in Normandy.

Our feast will take place at the home of a wealthy landmaðr in coastal southern Denmark. A landmaðr (lit. landed man) fell in the stratified Norse society somewhere between the free farmers and noble jarls. The inscription on the Swedish rune stone Sö 338 used landmaðr to identify Thorsteinn, who "fell in the east in Garðar (Russia), commander of the retinue, the best of landholders." We will join the landmaðr and his húsfrú (mistress of the house) and their drótt (household) to welcome their honored guests, local farmers, and traders from near and far and celebrate a winter feast.

Note: We will spend part of the day outside to allow the table staff to set up the hall for the náttverðr. Please plan to have appropriate (warm) outerwear.

Menus

Please note, some of the menu items are based on their availability. We will keep this website updated and notify attendees of any changes. Please inform event staff of any dietary restrictions.

Dagverðr

Dagverðr (lit. day meal) is the first meal of the day. Typically eaten in late morning (we're pushing it back a little to accommodate when we can access the site), it was a lighter meal that included things like porridge and dried meat and fish. Seating at this meal will be informal and it will not include ritual toasting or other formal activities.

Menu:

    • Smoked or cured fish
    • Skyr
    • Buttered Porridge
    • Pickled vegetables
    • Flatbread
    • Boiled eggs
    • Water, whey, and other non-alcoholic beverages

Náttverðr

Náttverðr (lit. night meal) is the evening meal, served after the working day was over (again, we're messing with the timeline a bit to accommodate hall availability). It was the larger, more formal meal and we will be using it to celebrate our ritual feast.

Menu:

  • Bread
  • Soft cheese
  • Pickled vegetables
  • Peas, turnips, parsnips, and carrots
  • Mussels
  • Chicken stew
  • Pork
  • Roasted elk (moose) heart
  • Ale, mead, and non-alcoholic beverages

Technology Policy

The goal of this event is to experience immersion in a past time, specifically, a time before cell phones and digital cameras. We hope to have a local professional photographer on site during the náttverðr to capture candid shots of the feast and therefore ask that you keep your phones and other (non-medically necessary) electronic devices out of sight as much as possible. Our plan is to have a space set aside in the back room for people to store such items of intrusive modernity so they are out of sight and out of mind during the event. (But still available in case of emergency.)

Why "PPF Beyond the Wall"?

Heiðabýr is just north of the Danevirke (well, Danevirke II). What wall did you think we were talking about? ;)
