PPF Beyond the Wall has been delayed to November 6, 2021 due to the Sick.
Among the sitters in the hall are various individuals with specific roles to play. We invite attendees to consider the roles below and if they are interested in fulfilling them. We will be sending out an email in January looking for volunteers, we will not be voluntelling. If you are interested in portraying a role not discussed below, please contact the event steward at cynehild@westkingdom.org with your proposal!
The landmaðr and húsfrú. Owners of the hall and hosts for the feast. The landmaðr will be expected to take the lead in welcoming his guests and gift giving (we'll provide the gifts, no worries!) and the húsfrú will be expected to lead the hand washing and fill the first cups. The host will be expected to take part in the word games and praising of both his drótt and his guests. Both the host and hostess need to be comfortable with public speaking and being “on stage”. The landmaðr and húsfrú should be prepared to look the part of relatively wealthy landowners.
This does not need to be a couple, though saga evidence seems to suggest that it would include at least one man (Egil’s Saga has men travelling without women. Husbands and wives are shown as travelling together in sagas including Ketil’s saga and the Laxdaela saga. I have not found evidence of women travelling without men.) The guests will be expected to take part in the word games and praising their drótt, the host and hostess, and the hosts’ drótt. For this reason, they should be comfortable with public speaking and being “on stage”. The honored guests should be prepared to dress appropriate to their status.
The drótt the dependents of the host and hostess and are tied to them by bonds of loyalty, tradition, clientage, etc. the drótt will include both male and female members (not necessarily of equal number). The chief man among the drótt will be expected, with the chief man among the guests’ drótt, to lead the boasting and word games during the feast. For this reason, they should be comfortable with public speaking and being “on stage”.
Like the Hosts’ drótt, the guests’ drótt can include both men and women. The chief man among the drótt will be expected, with the chief man among the hosts’ drótt, to lead the boasting and word games during the feast. For this reason, they should be comfortable with public speaking and being “on stage”.
As a reflection of the status of their leaders, the retinues should be prepared to dress well.
This group will make up the majority of the guests. During the feast they are invited to participate in boasting or word games, but are not expected to lead them.
