Plausibly Period Feast 2021

Plan now for a Norse Winter Feast in the style of tenth century Heiðabýr, Denmark, to be held November 6, 2021, in the wintery Lands of Oertha!

Then took she a figured cloth, white, of linen, and covered the board; thereafter took she a fine-baked loaf, white of wheat and covered the cloth: next she brought forth plenteous dishes, set with silver, and spread the board with dark-cooked pork and roasted birds. There was wine in a vessel and rich-wrought goblets; they drank and enjoyed the company as the day went by.

(Rígsþula, stanza 23, trans. O. Bray)

What is a plausibly period feast?

The Perfectly Period Feast (PPF) project explores food and material culture in an immersive way, giving attendees the opportunity to spend a day in the middle ages. Past PPF events have focused on fourteenth century Italy, fifteenth century Burgundy, fifteenth century England, sixteenth century Spain, and sixteenth century Germany. There have also been discussions of a Heian-period Japanese feast in Æthelmearc in the next year.

We are calling our event a plausibly period feast because there are limited resources for authentic early medieval Scandinavian foodways, so it would be disingenuous to call it perfectly period. Our event will focus on tenth century Heiðabýr (Hedeby, Haithabu), in southern Denmark and will include two meals as well as opportunity to trade and other amusements!

When will it be held?

Our feast will be held November 6, 2021.

The event will be a one day event, but we are working on organizing gatherings for Friday and Sunday to provide you the best value for your time!

Where will it be held?

The event will be held at the Athabascan Cultural Hall on the grounds of the Alaska Native Heritage center. To get here, fly into Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport. For more information on travel, check out or travel page!

What do I need to attend?

We ask that all attendees make their best attempt at clothing that is authentic for our time and place. Because Heiðabýr (Hedeby or Haithabu) was a major center for commerce, we are looking forward to seeing traders from perhaps as far away as Holmgarðr (Novgorod) or Dyflinn (Dublin). Now is the time to break out the wool!

Please note, we will not deny admittance to anyone who has a ticket. However, the point of this event is to build an immersive tenth century southern Scandinavian experience, in as authentic a way as possible. We're here to help you with your research and look forward to seeing what you make!

We are working on having basic eating kits available for purchase. These would likely include a cup, plate, spoon, and bowl. If you are interested in helping with this, please let the event team know. You are also welcome to bring your own eating kits, information on what is most appropriate is forthcoming!

There will only be 50 tickets available, they will go on sale online on December 14, 2019. For more information, click here.

Technology Policy

The goal of this event is to experience immersion in a past time, specifically, a time before cell phones and digital cameras. We will have a photographer on site during the náttverðr to capture candid shots of the feast and therefore ask that you keep your phones and other (non-medically necessary) electronic devices out of sight as much as possible. Our plan is to have a space set aside in the back room for people to store such items of intrusive modernity so they are out of sight and out of mind during the event (but still available in case of emergency).
