Performing Arts Department Head & Strings Ensemble Director
Prior to joining Westerly’s faculty in 2016, I worked as the Director of Education for Pacific Symphony, overseeing their large in-school partnership program - Class Act. Before Pacific Symphony, I served as the Music Teacher and Co-Theater Director at the Jemicy School of MD. In addition to teaching in independent schools, I have also taught in the Quincy Public School system (Quincy, MA) and the Fairfax County Public School system (Fairfax, VA).
As a music educator, I constantly pushing myself to explore new means of musical communication and encourage my students to do the same. Westerly’s educational philosophy of inquiry-based learning aligns beautifully with my personal teaching philosophy. I wants my students to develop a life-long love of, and curiosity for, music. Westerly understands that music is a vital part of a well-rounded education and I love working with such talented, creative faculty and students who embrace and support music development.
In my free time, I enjoys walking my dogs on the beach, attending local performances, and trying out new restaurants.

Music Technology & Band Director
Hi friends! My name is Mr. Lenertz and I am the Music Teaching Associate and Band Director at Westerly. I hail from the frost-bitten state of Minnesota and grew up in the suburbs of the Twin Cities. After receiving my Bachelor’s Degree in Music Performance (Bass Trombone) from the University of Minnesota in 2011, I moved to Long Beach, CA, and attended the Bob Cole Conservatory at California State University Long Beach where I received my Master’s Degree in Music Performance (Trombone). Since completing my Master’s Degree, I have been living and working as a professional musician and educator in the Los Angeles area, have recorded and performed with world-renowned musicians, toured both nationally and internationally, am on a Grammy-winning album, and even appear on-screen in an Oscar-winning movie! During that time I also taught private music lessons, worked as a music coach, and spent a year and a half as an Instructional Aide at IVA Middle School in Long Beach.
Since joining the Westerly Performing Arts Team in 2020, I have been so excited to be part of a learning community that cares so deeply about the growth of young minds and hearts and deems the Arts to be an integral part of that experience.
Outside of music and education, I love and crave spending time outdoors: Camping, hiking, backpacking, and connecting with nature are a way of life for me.

Welcome to 6th grade strings! This introductory course will teach students the basics of their primary instruments with the goal of preparing them for success in the 7th/8th performing ensembles. Students are expected to bring their instrument to school each day they have string class, as well as to bring their instrument home at night so they can practice; students may not leave their instruments at school overnight or over the weekend. Students will keep track of their home practice via Practice Logs.
During string ensemble, students will learn physical techniques, music theory, music appreciation, and ensemble skills . During home practice, students will learn how to practice autonomously and will further develop the skills and techniques they are learning during class. We will also learn the history of string instruments, study important string musicians (past and present), and will perform a wide variety of music.
At varying points of the year students will have the opportunity to learn guitar and ukulele. Instruments will be provided for class instruction, these skills will be showcased at the spring arts festival.

The 6th Grade Band is Westerly's Intermediate Band, where students continue the learning of their instrument, deepen their understanding of music notation, showcase their learning in performance settings (i.e. concerts), and develop an understanding of how music relates to identity, citizenship, and culture.
The 7th/8th Grade Band is Westerly's Performing Band, where students participate in a number of performances throughout the school year. The Performing Band class is a culmination of students’ work on their instruments from previous years and students showcase their learning by practicing and performing challenging music. Students are expected to regularly practice their instruments and music from class in order to perform at the highest level of which they are capable. Overall, students will continue the learning of their instrument, deepen their understanding of music notation, showcase their learning in performance settings (i.e. concerts), and develop an understanding of how music relates to identity, citizenship, and culture.
