WMS Physical Education Grading
ATHLETIC ABILITY IS NOT A FACTOR FOR STUDENTS' GRADES.
It is recognized that students have diverse needs for physical activity. Students can assume higher or lower skill roles, such as in team contests, and when possible, students are allowed to choose basic movement activities such as walking(treadmill), yoga, stretching or jumping rope, dance...
A low grade most likely indicates a refusal to participate, follow classroom expectations, rules, or guidelines. I.E. Because they're standing or sitting around!!
All students are expected to show their individual "BEST EFFORT."
Units
Units consist of three content areas being taught during the same length of time - generally a week or two.
Sample Content Areas
Cardiovascular Training, Treadmills, Ellipticals, Muscular (Strength) Training
Jogging/Stationary Equipment, Soccer, Indoor Soccer, Jumping rope
Basketball – Half Court Skill Games, Volleyball, Walking
Field Games, Floor Hockey, Team Handball, Kickball, Cone tag
Softball/Wiffle Ball, Jog/Walk, Volleyball(again), Spikeball, Cornhole
Video Workouts (Just Dance; Aerobics, tabada) - Oh no, sorry. Our dance, tabada and aerobics classes ended when they gave that room to the Music Department. Deck Tennis, Flexibility (Daily stretching)
Grading
Grades are primarily based upon the students ability to follow behavioral guidelines, which include effort and preparation (see Daily Rubric), as well as the students’ individual effort in various physical skills (see Skill Rubric). Daily expectations and physical standards are explained and posted for all to see.
Absences from class must be made up(see make-up section below). Exceptions for making up class(es) may include the following: A long term medical condition - Specialized meetings with another staff member - A team function - A note from a medical professional - Any other reason the teacher deems acceptable.
Physical Education Grading Rubric (Daily Rubric) 10 points daily
Rubric (scoring guide or scale) – Description of student performance on a specific task or standard (those things that a student is expected to know or be able to do at a particular grade level).
Skill Rubric
Student skill performance in Physical Education class will be evaluated daily using the following categories (4 points)
4 – fully achieves the purposes of the task*
2 – completes the purposes of the task substantially*
0 – fails to achieve purposes of the task
*more specific activity/assignment rubrics will be posted in the gymnasium, when necessary, to define exactly how a purpose (aim of the task) is “fully achieved” or completed “substantially.”
Daily expectations will be evaluated using the following categories (6 points)
Effort/Participation
2 – Substantial; regularly proficient at skill and/or knowledge of a game
1 – Minimal/Fragmented/Inconsistent
0 – Not Attempted/Unacceptable
Behavior
2 – Cooperative; consistently follows rules and demonstrates responsible social behavior
1 – Inconsistent/gaps in ability to follow rules
0 – Disruptive/Unable to follow directions; lacks self control and/or respect for others
Preparation - All students are required to wear appropriate footwear; Sneakers(Tennis shoes), Other secure rubber sole with shallow heel. Inappropriate/unsafe footwear may result in a loss of the 2 points and/or an alternative activity such as walking.
2 – Fully prepared for class participation (dressed in appropriate footwear; on time for class)
1 – Dressed for class; tardy; missed attendance
0 – Unacceptable footwear
Points
In most cases, each class is worth 10 points. 6 points that correspond to the Daily Expectations Rubric (above) and 4 points that correspond to the performance rubric (above). Students will be constantly evaluated. From class start to finish students must fulfill daily expectations that are posted for all to see.
Sample Grading Scheme (23 classes for the quarter=230 possible points)
222-230 points = 97-100% (A+)
213-221 points = 93-96% (A)
206-212 points = 90-92% (A-)
199-205 points = 87-89% (B+)
190-198 points = 83-86% (B)
183-189 points = 80-82% (B-) AND SO ON...
Make up classes and Google Classwork
Students should be turning in the attachment form(Make-up form) embedded in the assignments on the classwork section of google classroom. Go to google classroom, then click classwork. There, click on the Physical Education Make-up Form, then click on the form. The student needs to fill in the information on the form(date, description, adult’s name), then click “turn in” in the upper right corner of the screen. Instructions are provided in the classwork section of the google classroom. Up to three activities(class credits) may be entered onto one form.
Make up privileges are allowed for missed classes/points due to absences from school, quarantines, medical excuses, forgetting a change of clothes, excused absences from class or a reason the teacher may accept. To receive full credit, students must make up any of this missed Physical Education Classes/Times, EXCEPT those missed
because of a medical excuse by a doctor. Students with longer-term medicals may receive an M as a grade.
Lost points due to tardiness, lack of effort or behavioral reasons are NOT subject to make up.
Appropriate Footwear and a Change of clothes
Students are expected to wear appropriate footwear to Physical Education (P.E.) class for full credit. Those who forget footwear will participate insofar as the teacher deems appropriate and safe. It is mandatory that students change into or wear athletic/flexible type socks and sneakers (or comparable footwear). Footwear must be secured tightly. Students may wear the same socks and sneakers (tennis shoes) that they wear to other classes. No watches, earrings or other jewelry is allowed during activity. Sharing of footwear is strictly forbidden. Although not required, it is strongly recommended that students bring a change of clothes and grooming supplies (comb/brush, deodorant/antiperspirant-aerosols are not allowed) to Physical Education class. Locker rooms are available. A dampened facecloth or towel will help clean skin perspiration after class. The locker room is not a secure area for valuables. Students must leave valuables at home or in their main school locker. Physical Education teachers are generally not responsible for holding valuables, unless the item is taken by the teacher.
A pattern of not wearing appropriate footwear may affect grading. Students who do not wear appropriate footwear may be graded, per quarter as follows:
1-2 times = Conference with student, support if necessary
3 or more times - Loss of 20% of grade on each occurrence
Medical excuses
The Physical Ed. Teacher should be made aware of a medical excuse. Physical Education teachers generally accept medical excuses through parent authorization, the school nurse, the guidance department, the social services department, the ELA teacher, the school photographer, a doctor or medical professional. Students should present medical concerns to the teacher before the start of PE class. The authorization should specify the length of absence and the nature of the injury/illness. Some medical excuses must be made up for class credit, as those that specify no good reason for missing PE class. Extended long-term illness/injury may receive an “M” grade. Thanks for reading.
