“Intelligence and skill can only function at the peak of their capacity when the body is healthy and strong.”

At West End, we endeavour to create a culture which aims to inspire our children to lead actives lives, develop a sense of self belief and determination and to achieve their sporting potential. The intent of teaching Physical Education is to give children the tools and understanding required to make a positive impact on their own physical health and well-being.
Physical Education at West End strives to provide opportunities for our children to explore and acquire basic skills with increasing co-ordination and control. Through coaching, modelling and discussion, pupils learn to select and apply tactics in a range of different sports. Our children are encouraged to use their initiative to lead activities and to reflect upon their own performances to improve the quality of their work and to achieve their personal goals. All children have the opportunity to enjoy being physically active, maintain a healthy lifestyle and through the medium of sport, increase their self-esteem. We aspire for children to adopt a positive mind-set and believe that anything can be achieved with determination and resilience.
Through regular participation in the ‘School Games’ initiative, children learn the importance of good sporting behaviour as individuals, team players and spectators. Day to day teaching and participation in competition allows opportunities for children to recognise the importance of respect, honesty, self belief, determination and passion. Thus embedding life-long values such as co-operation, collaboration and equity of play.
Our PE Curriculum, along with PSHE and Science, teaches children about the importance of healthy living and learning about the need for good nutrition. We aim for children to develop the necessary knowledge and skills which will have a positive impact on their future by becoming physically active citizens to benefit their long-term health and well-being.
