"Science knows no country, because knowledge belongs to humanity, and is the torch which illuminates the world."
Louis Pasteur
Science has changed our lives and is vital to our future prosperity. Within the curriculum, science is concerned with increasing pupils’ understanding of the world by building up a body of key foundational knowledge and concepts and by developing skills associated with science as a process of enquiry.
At West End, we aim to develop pupils’ sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena. All our children are encouraged to develop and use a range of skills including observations, planning and investigations, as well as questioning the world around them. They are taught to analyse data and think critically about what they observe and discover, repeating and re-evaluating where necessary.
The study of science encourages respect for living organisms and the physical environment. Collaboration in scientific investigations is essential and this provides ample opportunities for children to think as individuals but work together, listening respectfully to the opinions of others while expressing and justifying their own.
Specialist vocabulary for topics is taught and built up to enable our children to communicate effectively. When discussing ideas and making predictions, they are expected to ask questions and express their views confidently, presenting their findings in different ways.
With the expectation that so many careers in the future will be linked to STEM subjects, the study of science will help to empower and equip our children for life in the modern world. It is our aim for pupils to gain an understanding of the uses and implications of science, today and for the future.
