West Bath School’s school-wide implementation of the Student Engaged Core Practices, including developing a growth mindset, using learning targets, supporting students to be leaders of their own learning, daily assessment for learning practices, and differentiated instruction helped to lay the foundation for all learners to be successful. West Bath School students believe that they can achieve the goals they set, and work to develop the mindset necessary to do so. All students set individualized goals based on their character and achievement data, create plans to achieve their goals, and reflect upon progress at regular intervals. Students share their progress as part of their portfolio of growth at Student-Led Conferences.
State Data Set - Disadvantaged Subgroup Information
West Bath School state data from the last two years demonstrate that students who are economically disadvantaged outperform the state average of students who economically disadvantaged in both English Language Arts and in mathematics. The subgroup data sets are not available for 2014-2015.
Additionally, our subgroup data shows that students who are economically disadvantaged meet standards at rates that are similar to students who are not economically disadvantaged.
State Data Set - Special Education
Students who are part of the special education subgroup also consistently outperform the state average of students who are in the special education subgroup in both English Language Arts and in mathematics. Due to the small number of students who tested in 2016-2017, West Bath School subgroup data is not available in ELA.
Formative Progress Monitoring Towards Proficiency
The West Bath School students have responded positively to systems of formative progress monitoring over the last decade that allow for all students to reach their potential regardless of any subgroup identification. All students have access to a continuum of services for exceptional learners based upon their needs. This evidence set shows this continuum through student-created Individual Learning Plans, samples of student progress, student goals and reflections, student mindfulness work, high quality student summer STEM work (Summer STEM is attended by the school’s struggling learners) in addition to sharing data on the school’s high percentage of students who qualify as both gifted and talented and disadvantaged demonstrating that all of West Bath’s students have equal opportunities to excel.
Students who receive interventions such as Title 1A or special services actively participate in student engaged assessment practices. Students read and interpret their achievement data and set personal goals. They track their progress, reflect on their growth, and set new goals which is collected in a personalized portfolio. Student share these portfolios with their families in addition to their student-led conferences in their regular classroom. This helps the students own their learning, celebrate their growth, and strive to reach their potential.
Students with exceptional gifts or talents have the opportunity to develop an Individualized Learning Plan to cultivate continual growth as a learner in the areas that they have been identified as exceptional. The Individualized Learning Plan is a tool to closely monitor complexity of product, process, and content with emphasis on high order thinking. This ensures appropriate levels of challenge and opportunities for growth in the education of a child with exceptional gifts and talents. The students use EL Educations' three dimensions of student achievement to build a passion project complete with objectives and action steps that integrate learning standards. Passion projects are presented to authentic audiences of the students' choosing and contribute to a better world.
Summer STEM Club is a summer enrichment opportunity for students at WBS who may benefit from building vocabulary, literacy, and math skills in an authentic learning experience. Summer STEM Club embodies the deeper learning practices of EL Education by immersing the students into a unique expedition topic. Students are invited into the program based on achievement scores and teacher recommendations.
