West Bath School’s partnership with EL Education began with a focus on creating a community of learners. We set schoolwide expectations, fostered a positive climate for learning, and built and honored traditions to establish a strong foundation of character and scholarship in students. Simultaneously, teachers focused on ensuring curriculum and standards were aligned, mapped learning targets, created or identified texts, tasks, and assessments and wrote and taught rigorous and authentic expeditions. Consistent schoolwide instructional and student-engaged assessment practices were emphasized and have led to the success of West Bath students, as measured by the annual Maine Educational Assessment (MEA). Students in grades 3-5 are required to take the annual assessment in the spring of each year in reading, writing, and mathematics. The data sets below demonstrate that West Bath School students consistently exceed state proficiency averages in both reading and math, as measured by the annual state assessment.
ELA State Assessment Data
While Maine students have been taking the MEAs for years, the assessment that is considered to be the MEA has varied over time. In 2014-2015, Maine participated in the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium, however, the state withdrew from the consortium after one year. In 2015-2016, Maine began utilizing the Maine Education Assessment in Mathematics and English Language Arts/Literacy (eMPowerME) to determine student proficiency. The English Language Art data in the table below compares the average proficiency rate of West Bath students in grades 3-5 to the average proficiency rates for the entire state for the school years 2014-2015, 2015-2016, and 2016-2017.
Reading Proficiency as Compared to Neighboring Schools
In addition to comparing West Bath School's proficiency rates in English Language Arts to the state, scores can be compared to the elementary schools that are part of West Bath's former school district. The chart below shows that West Bath students outperformed all of the elementary schools that are members of the former school district in English Language Arts in each of the last three years.
Mathematics State Assessment Data
The Mathematics data in the table below compares the average proficiency rate of West Bath students in grades 3-5 to the average proficiency rates for the entire state for the school years 2014-2015, 2015-2016, and 2016-2017. As is evident in the data chart, West Bath School students exceeded state average proficiency rates in each of the last three years.
Math Proficiency as Compared to Neighboring Schools
As was seen in the ELA data, West Bath students also outperformed the elementary schools that are members of the former school district in mathematics in each of the last three years.
