West Bath School students understand that they have the capacity to make the world a better place and have shown this capacity and desire in a variety of ways. Through expeditions, field work, collaboration with experts, and service learning opportunities, students have worked to beautify spaces at West Bath School by creating products that make for a more welcoming learning environment. Students are passionate about solving local and world problems and consistently model our school mindset of, “We are Crew".
Authentic Actions & Products - School
This evidence set shows that through West Bath School's expeditions, students have engineered authentic products that have the added value of creating beautiful spaces. Contributions range from the development and installation of a new walking path and outdoor classroom to celebrate the green outdoors, to a special mosaic crafted from students working collaboratively with an artist, to the opportunity for older students to build our "fleet" of wooden research vessels. No matter the grade, students of all ages at West Bath are contributing to a legacy of creating authentic products that make our school a better place with both functionality and beauty.
A Focus on Kindness
At the beginning of this school year, we focused on ways that we can support one another to have a positive year. At schoolwide crew, we read the book, The Friend Ship, and classes then made lists of ways they can support their friends. Each child set a friendship goal for the year. Crews have continued to monitor progress towards the goal throughout the year.
West Bath's 99 Commitments to Kindness and Compassion
In a response to school safety concerns nationwide, many students and schools organized walkouts to communicate the way students were feeling. West Bath students and staff took a different approach, and made 99 Commitments to Kindness and Compassion. These commitments demonstrate the 99 things that we as a school can do right now to make our community a better place.

Authentic Actions & Products - World
Over time, our students have seen the definition of the word "community" grow in scope and impact. They have made contributions to their school and local communities. They are also learning the value of reaching out to the world through projects like building a butterfly garden, fundraising for Heifer International, and learning how to assess the risk and reward of microlending through annual contributions to Kiva.org.
#WeAreCrew
Second Grade students modeled kindness at crew, as they donated a check to our own Mr. Schulz for $440. The second grade students have been learning about how natural disasters impact students’ ability to attend school. Mr. Schulz, also modeling kindness, was in the process of raising funds, to allow his family to travel to the USVI with the organization, All Hands Volunteers, to participate in hurricane relief work. The Second Graders used their fundraiser funds to support this relief work!
