CAS Project

Techable Event

Investigation

  • Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

  • Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience

I have always had a passion for technology and computer science, thus, in grade 9 I had co-founded the Computer Science club at Wells international school. We have had a few events and have developed the computer science knowledge of the members of our club. As the head of teaching swift code to the members of various grades, I gained skills such as patience due to the difference in learning abilities and proactiveness as I would place all my focus into building the skills of each and every member. As I was keen on spreading knowledge among our wells community about technology and its relevant implications on all of our lives, we decided to host an event that presents workshops on different topics within the field of computer science. Our goal was to create an event in which people can learn new and important information in a comfortable manner.

Preparation

  • Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

  • Demonstrate the skills and recognise the benefits of working collaboratively

  • Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience

Before moving forward with the plan, we had to discuss how the event was going to occur. We decided that the event was going to be online so that I can be more accessible to students amidst the pandemic. As we finally came to a conclusion, we had created a document planning out the event so that it can be proposed and affirmed by our student events supervisor. Then we had decided on the date and the timetable for the day of the event. As there were going to be multiple workshops presenting it was required to have a structured schedule. We would have weekly meetings with our club members who were going to be present about the workshops and helped them create their presentations. Each member was allowed to present a topic which they preferred. As leaders, we did not create our own workshop as we had to set up the event and helped the other members prepare.

Action

  • Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process

  • Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences

We held the event on the 16th of January, on google meet. Members from our club and other Wells students had come to watch the workshops that the club members had made. There were a total of 8 workshops with each being around 15-20 minutes long. The topics ranged from artificial intelligence to nanotech to cryptocurrency blockchain technology. Due to certain technical issues faced on the day with google meet, certain individuals struggle to present and stay on schedule. However, we quickly worked around this as we had to quickly restructure the schedule and assist the presenters in solving their problems before they presented.

Reflection

  • Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

  • Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process

  • Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences

  • Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance

The reason that I wanted to do the event is because I wanted to create an opportunity for people to learn about technology and its implications on our world. I believe that how students are taught about technology today will play a crucial role in the safer and accelerated development of technology in the future. executing this event allowed me to express this passion for technology. I am sad that I was not able to place more effort and time towards the event it was done in my senior year, however, I hope to have created a foundation for the future members and leaders of the wells computer science club so that Techable can grow larger and larger every year to eventually become a large scale event.

Demonstration

  • Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process

  • Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience

  • Demonstrate the skills and recognise the benefits of working collaboratively

  • Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences

We first assigned groups within the club and administered them in picking their presentation topic of choice. After assisting in preparing the research and presentations we had a mock run a month before the actual event where few of the workshops had presented so that the members could get used to the schedule and timetables. The event lasted for about 4 hours with 8 workshops presented.

During the intensive preparation period, I have come to realize that it is important to manage the small details as well; I had to delegate some tasks and responsibilities. It took a bit of faith to let go of control, but in the end, it was necessary for all the tasks to be completed for a successful event. Through these experiences with the Computer Science Club, I have learned that being a successful leader is a group effort thus one important skill that any leader should have is to make sure their team works well collaboratively.
