On April 28, I had an opportunity to visit the Wells Bang Na Campus to spread awareness about technology. At that time, IB students were learning about Knowledge and Technology in Theory of Knowledge (TOK) class.
I never thought that I would be able to have this opportunity during my time as a high schooler and it is one of my dream to become a teacher which this can be the first experience that is closest to being a teacher. I was glad that I had an amazing partner who is my best friend, Zara, whom I worked with for this tech awareness campaign. We decided to focus on Social Media and its effect on Mental Health amongst teenagers (ages 13 to 19).
Initially, our target audience was freshmen and sophomores. We made an Instagram account that is accessible to everyone as well as the students. However, we felt that it would be beneficial for primary students to know as well about the effects of Social Media on mental health. Although they are not teenagers yet, this presentation can potentially make them be more aware of their exposure of social media in the future as they grow older. Both of us also wanted to let them know about our experience and thoughts on it. Considering that the students are in primary, we had to make a few adjustments to the way we phrase the words as it might be too complex for them to comprehend. Furthermore, we made our presentation slides appealing as we thought that they would be intrigued by it.
While presenting to the kids, I did not expect them to know as much as we do in the knowledge technology and social media. Knowing that they have some knowledge in certain risks like FOMO and sleeping problems, it shows that they are not ignorant about the potential risks that could affect them. At the same time, I feel that this generation know more compared to when we were their age. I enjoyed sharing the knowledge that I have gained from TOK class and generally in social media. I was able to learn about their interests and their concerns. If I was given this opportunity again, I would love to share more of my knowledge with them.
