ROTC Training

Service and Activity

For the past 10 weeks, my Saturdays were dedicated to ROTC. The ROTC program is dedicated to student soldiers, which offers an experience of how it is being in the Thai army at a very young age. The Thai ROTC program is 3 years long, starting from Grade 10 to Grade 12. Each year consists of 11 weeks of training each Saturday, with the second and third year candidates being required to go to a 3-5 day camp in the eastern region of Thailand. This program has helped me and others become a better person overall, the program also teaches people about moral, traditions, and Thai culture, it has broadened my mind in how I view things.

Our activities include running, marching, and many other things that soldiers would go through everyday. I am currently in the 2nd year of this program. The services that we had included looking over and enforcing rules to the people in the school during International day, Throughout the 2 years of experience, the ROTC program has really changed me as a person, I understand the struggles that soldiers go through to protect our country, and that the main purpose of this program was to develop ourselves both mentally and physically.

The 5 W's

It was part of the ROTC Training program, in Bangkok on November 16 2019 from 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM. The training program teaches how to be soldiers, and become better people. I did this with the rest of my Thai classmates, most of the participants in the program are from other schools around Bangkok.

Expectations

I expected the training to be hard, and it was, we practiced marching, had to do some exercise which involved running in the bright sun. But the outcome felt much better than I thought, I felt much better after the training than I thought I would.

Plan/Day

I woke up at 5:30 AM, I get ready and put on my uniform and the stuff needed for the day. I had to be at the ROTC center by 7:30, I got in the car and got there about 25 minutes early. In the morning, we were told that we would have an exercise drill, then we had lunch. For the rest of the afternoon we were in the classroom where we were taught about Thai culture and history.

Feelings

It was tiring after the exercise in the morning as the sun was out very bright, and it affected me a lot after the exercise. I felt much better afterwards where I was able to cool down. It was a normal experience for me.

Findings

I found out that other people like me also were very tired, some had to take a breather during the 800 meter run. Although the exercise was hard, I can understand that the staff were doing what was best from us.

Future

I will absolutely be doing this again in the future, it is good exercise and there is always a good outcome whenever I go.

Learning Outcomes

One of the few learning outcomes I had from this experience was perseverance and commitment because it shows that as long as I commit to doing things in a regular basis, there will be improvement. The other learning outcome is ethics of choice and actions, because it shows that we are dedicated in doing the right things for ourselves, and it is always good to exercise.
