In a paired/partner reading strategy, two students read the same passage aloud to each other. When partnering students, more fluent readers can be paired with less fluent readers, or students who read at the same level can be paired to reread a story they have already had modelled for them.
Building background knowledge is essential for strong writing. Students need content, context, and vocabulary to clearly express their ideas. One practical way to build this knowledge is through 20 minutes a day of Partner Reading and Paragraph Shrinking: a classwide reading intervention that benefits all students by giving them shared information, ideas, and language they can then draw on for writing. To see how it works, start watching the video from 17:10. The approach is research-based and designed to:
Increase reading fluency and comprehension
Strengthen vocabulary
Build the background knowledge students need for speaking and writing tasks
