Math Curriculum: Building Blocks

Building Blocks™ embeds mathematical learning in PreK students’ daily activities—from designated math activities to circle and story time—to relate informal math knowledge to formal concepts. Providing a solid foundation for future math study, Building Blocks™ PreK:

• Offers interactive, hands-on manipulatives.
• Offers real-world exploration through manipulatives, books, and more.
• Engages students in mathematical thinking
• Emphasizes conceptual thinking and reasoning to improve skill acquisition.
• Develops learning aligned with state and national standards:
  • Number and Operations
  • Geometry
  • Measurement
  • Patterns and Algebra
  • Data Analysis and Classification.
• Incorporates assessment with learning events.

Home Connections:

• We will send home a worksheet each week that explains what math concepts we have explored, as well as, ideas for how to extend the math concept at home. You do not have to return the worksheet to school.
• Here is a link to directions for the Counting Jar, which is a fun way to incorporate counting with items students may want to share with classmates. We begin the Counting Jar as part of the Building Blocks Curriculum in the second half of the year.
