Essay

"Edie Fake's The Stick Inn: Celebrating Queer Spaces with Architectural Art"

Judges' Comments

The judges write that Sally Song's essay deftly examines the queer architectural spaces featured in the art of Edie Fake. Sally's analysis is both nuanced and authoritative, and it is expertly woven into an argument with a notably sophisticated structure. While the central piece was accessible to Sally since it is part of Wellesley's Davis Museum collection, there is almost no published scholarly commentary on it. The judges were impressed by Sally's use of adjacent and indirect sources to illuminate the construction and meaning of The Stick It Inn, and to integrate them into this lively essay.
