Students will be able to nominate themselves for the award at the end of the semester in which they are enrolled in First-Year Writing. Students will receive email notification and information from their professors regarding the window for nomination each semester.
Students may nominate themselves for the award by completing the Rebecca Summerhays Award for Growth in Writing Nomination Form. Students must notify their professors of their self-nomination.
Your nomination must include a short reflection (about 250-300 words) in which you describe your growth as a writer in your first-year writing course. Think back to the beginning of the semester, and consider where you are now. Review some of the drafts, revisions, or short assignments you wrote, and think about how your development is demonstrated in them. Use specific examples to describe what challenges you faced, what issues you tackled in your writing, and what strategies you used to improve your process, develop your confidence, and strengthen your writing skills. If you are chosen as the winner of the Summerhays Award, this reflection may be published on the Writing Program website.
