As we move into September, it’s a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the outstanding achievements and hard work of our students, whānau, and staff.
CSW Finals and Winter Tournament Successes
Our students have been truly exceptional this winter season. There has been intense competition in the CSW finals in Basketball (Junior and Senior), Football, Under 18 Rugby and Underwater Hockey. There have been exciting opportunities participating in this year's Winter Tournament. I was lucky enough to be able to head out earlier this week and see our Badminton team at Porirua and Hockey team over in Carterton. Our students showcase remarkable skill and dedication demonstrating our school values both on and off the field. A huge thank you to all the whānau who have supported our teams, whether cheering from the sidelines or in your roles as coaches and managers. Your involvement makes a huge difference.
Course Selection
We've also been engaging with our learners about their options and courses for the upcoming year. There was an impressive turnout of students and families to the Course Selection evenings held earlier in the term and it is exciting to see students thinking carefully about planning their future pathways. We have been following up with whānau but if you have been unable to submit your selections for 2025 please follow up with your Year Level Dean as soon as possible.
Rāwhiti's Big Sing Finale Success
A special mention to Rāwhiti, who performed brilliantly at the Big Sing Finale. Their silver medal achievement and their emotionally charged closing performance of "Māriekura" by the Modern Māori Quartet was a highlight of the gala. Congratulations to all involved!
Year 8 Enrolment Meetings
It’s been a pleasure meeting our new students for 2025 during the Year 8 enrolment meetings. If you know anyone considering joining our East whānau next year, please encourage them to submit their enrolment forms as soon as possible. Here is the link from our website

Kia ora whānau,
The parent's association would like to invite all whānau to our movie fundraiser on September 10th at the Roxy movie theatre! Tickets available from reception during school hours or online here: https://wegc.company.site/products/WEPA-Movie-Night-p686690607
The parent’s association (WEPA) consists of caregivers who support the school community by contributing to events and activities. The funds collected by WEPA support worthwhile causes in the school such as, our Matariki Celebrations, Poly Group, Rāwhiti and Multi choirs, the Readers Cup participants and Sports Tournament week, to mention a few.
We currently meet monthly with Gael Ashworth, the Principal, and are looking for whānau to join our committee. So if you would like to know more about the school and how you can help, please come to our next meeting on Wednesday the 11th of September, at 6 pm. We'd also like to thank all the year 9 parents who took part in the WEPA survey earlier this year, it's much appreciated, and we will be in touch this month.
We look forward to meeting you, and thanks to all whānau who continue to support us. Please feel free to contact us at parents@wegc.school.nz, we welcome any inquiries or suggestions.
Take care and all the best,

At the end of term 2, I attended the national Model United Nations event with Madison Wicks. This took place over four days at the Pipitea campus of Victoria University, with students from all over New Zealand, and even Australia, taking part. We were each assigned a country to represent. I got India and Madison got Mongolia. We also selected three committees to take part in. I was in Crisis, the International Court of Justice and the Social, Cultural and Humanitarian Committee. In each committee we debated amendments written by the United Nations. We worked together with other delegates to make changes to the amendment that would benefit our country. Among others, some of the issues we debated were the creation of a treaty for Mars sovereignty and the question of the global standard for democracy.
As well as the committees, there were also a variety of other activities spread out over the event. There was an opening ceremony at parliament, where we got the opportunity to hear an MP speak, a regional group dinner, speaker panels and a gala night at Takina.
We also took part in a specialised agencies workshop where we learned how agencies within the UN operate in the event of a humanitarian crisis.
On the last day everybody took part in a plenary session, which is where the delegates from all the countries debate an issue. For this event the issue was the use of AI in education and literature.
Overall, Model UN was really fun. I met lots of great people from all over the country and learned a lot. It was a great experience and I would definitely recommend it.
Our students Erica Beri, Fern Renner and Greta Larsen (Year 10) have made it to the Junior Premier Final against Wellington College from 12+ Greater Wellington regional teams - an amazing achievement.
They have been supported by their fabulous students coaches Fatimai Lefale and Imogen Feinson, (and Jessica Xie earlier in the year).
The final will be on Tuesday the 10th of September at 6:00pm at Vic Uni Pipitea Campus, Thorndon.
Year 13 Creative Technologies students have been working hard to design and create outfits inspired by existing designers' work. Three students, Lucia Hay, Mikayla Perry, and Lauren St Just, entered their creations into the Hokonui Fashion Design Awards, held in Gore at the end of July.
Lauren St Just received the Bernina School Award of Excellence and won the Schools Upcycled Category for her outfit made from broken tents and a sleeping bag. Lucia Hay received a Merit Award for her crocheted dress, which was entered in the School Natural Fibres Category.
This was a fantastic outcome, showcasing the remarkable skills of high school students and designers from around Aotearoa. You can see more from the event here: https://www.hokonuifashion.co.nz/results-2024
You can read more about the event in this article in Stuff recently or at the Awards website :

Another week of Purple Power was held at the school in first week of August - events were organised by the Prefects and students were invited to attend during lunchtime : being creative for Monday and Tuesday with Painting a new PPW banner and purple tie dying, we had jump jam on Wednesday in the Sports Centre, and then on Thursday we held a quiz between Rongotai College and WEGC prefects centered around the theme of woman empowerment, and Friday topped it off with a Bake Sale held by the prefects, donating funds to charity Rei Kōtuku
We are currently enjoying hosting our largest cohort of international students to date at school. From Italy to the Maldives and everything inbetween - Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, Germany, Sri Lanka and China.
Planning for 2025 is well underway and we are looking for a few more host families to care for Japanese students who will come for Term one only. If you are interested in finding out more please get in touch with our Homestay Co-ordinator, Athena London. athena.london@wegc.school.nz
A group of Integrated Studies students recently visited Vincentian Rest Home in Berhampore. The focus of the visit was giving back to the community and working towards the service aspect of the Duke of Edinburgh Award. The residents enjoyed the singing, chatting and baking. It was a wonderful experience for all, and we look forward to going back.
