It was an absolute privilege to attend our recent school Prize Giving. It is always a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge the success of our students in the many different aspects of school life. I experience a great sense of pride at seeing the whole community come together to celebrate and reward the success of our students in academic achievement, service and participation and also excellence in the sporting and cultural arenas.
External exams are now under way for our Senior students. Staff continue to offer workshops to support students with revision and preparation and also the chance to complete outstanding assessment work in some cases.
It is also a time for us to say farewell to our Year 13 students who have been great role models for our Juniors. We look forward to hearing how your futures unfold.
We also farewell staff who are leaving at the end of the year. This year we farewell:

Kia ora koutou,
Firstly we’d like to thank all the WEGC whānau for amazing support this year with WEPA events, those who have provided donations, volunteered services and baked goods and those that attended our inspirational breakfasts and of course, our fabulous guest speakers.
The funds raised this year enabled us to contribute to the following school groups: Kapa Haka; Poly group; Rāwhiti; Multichoir; Te Aka; Year 9 Readers Cup; Digital Technology Cyber Security Competition, as well as Leavers and Prize Giving functions.
WEPA would like to thank Anna Wilson (Associate Principal) whose support from the school is invaluable, as well as Hayley Warren (Events Co-ordinator) for making our events run smoothly.
We would like to take this time to wish students all the best for their exams and furthermore to wish the school leavers all the best in your future endeavours !
On a personal note, I would like to thank all WEPA committee members for their tireless work, dedication and enthusiasm to the cause. Hopefully next year we will have a few more helping hands. Please feel free to contact us on: parents@wegc.school.nz
May you and your whānau have a peaceful festive season.
Mā te wā
Sunjna Harduth, Chair, WEPA committee
This year's Prize Giving ceremony was held in the Michael Fowler Centre and the evening was a great success. It was a great show of our school spirit, and the performance groups including Kapa Haka, Rāwhiti, Multi choir, and Poly Group bringing their best. The song Lo'u Fesoasoani performed by Rāwhiti was written by an ex-student, Helen Tupai, which made it a wonderful connection with our past and present students.
Our Dux for 2023, who also receives the Melville Earl Hankins Scholarship, and the Myra Webb Award is Liv Deane. This year had two Proxime Accessit, Nellie Potter and Abigail Graham. Congratulations to them and to all prize winners.
A big thank you to everyone involved in the organisation and presentation of the Prize Giving awards this year. The annual event is a highlight of the school year, and takes a lot of preparation by everyone whether behind the scenes or on the stage.
Congratulations to He Huarahi Tamariki students Bree Kietonga and Bailey Taylor-Edwards who picked up the YES Greater Wellington Regional Championship award for 2023 and are off to Nationals. Their business Nature’s Koura also won the Victoria University Innovation award. Well done to Bree and Bailey for their hard work and commitment, and we look forward to hearing how their company performs at the National competition on 4 December. Ka mau te wehi!
Gecko Grips business students with their iron-on grip sock product, pitched at the Wellington Regional Finals award ceremony recently and came second (by 1 point!) for the main award of the night, The Wellington Region Lion Foundation Company of the Year. Their pitch was on point and they also handled the impromptu questions from the judges extremely well. Liv and Olivia pitched for the group, which is made up of Pieta Proudfoot, Sophie Crombie, Liv Deane, and Olivia Wu
They were then selected as a wildcard for a second chance, earning a spot in the National Finals on 4 December.

Our art students who are studying at all levels for NCEA, in Painting, Sculpture, Photography, Design showed their work to the community on Friday 20 October.
A lot of hard work has gone into the portfolios, and it was great to acknowledge this with the exhibition. We had parents/caregivers, teachers, staff and friends coming to view the work in a well-attended event.
At the end of October the Home Economics and Technology Teachers' Association of NZ Student Fashion Awards (HETTANZ) were held, and some of our Technology students received awards. Each of the entries by the students had to include supporting work about the rationale of the garment, their research and development and a photo journal of the construction.
Congratulations to the students and thank you to teachers and Whānau for their support :
Scarlett Prescott-Mason, 1st place in the Senior Creative category
Lucia Hay, Special Mention in the Senior Creative category
Ava Johnstone, Highly Commended in the Senior Technical category
Lauren St Just, Highly Commended in the Senior Sustainable Design category
Scarlett Prescott-Mason, Special Mention in the Senior Sustainable Design category
The top award winners received prizes of sewing machines and overlockers provided by Bernina.
Not only were our students awarded for Technology work, Whaea Nan Walden, recently received the Teaching Education award at a ceremony held in October by TENZ (Technology Education New Zealand). This professional association supports and promotes all levels and areas of technology education in New Zealand, and is teacher-led and organised.
Now that our borders are fully open, we have been delighted to have international students back at our school. This year we have welcomed students from Japan, Thailand, China, Hong Kong, Brazil, South Korea, Taiwan, Switzerland and Germany. We've been amazed at how well they have all settled in, achieving academically, and making the most of every opportunity.
We are sad to farewell our leavers and wish them all the best for the future. To those returning home for the summer - safe travels and we look forward to seeing you back at the start of next year. 2024 is ramping up to be another busy year with plenty of new enrolments, including a large group of Japanese students who will be here just for term one.
If you have a spare room and are interested in hosting an international student in 2024, we'd love to hear from you. We are still looking for homestays for long term and short stay students.
Please email international@wegc.school.nz for more information.
A party of NZ Educators including four members of staff from WEGC (Jabeena Khalique, Michelle Kennedy, Kathryn Stokes and Kat Matthews) travelled to China for 10 days, coordinated by Yezhu Zhao from the Confucius Institute at Victoria University of Wellington, who were our sponsors.
We visited Beijing, Xiamen and Quanzhou and enjoyed our visits to a primary and high school, where we met students and staff and observed how different the schools were from our own. We were extremely fortunate to have a chance to take part in many cultural experiences including The Great Wall of China. The Forbidden City, The Temple of Heaven and Tiananmen Square as well as tasting delicious food.
Xiamen University generously hosted us and provided lectures on Chinese culture, history and customs, including traditional medicine, acupuncture and all about tea of course. It was a fantastic opportunity to learn more about China and its people and a chance to develop our language skills for the future.
On the last day of Term 3 (Friday, 22nd September), we came together to celebrate the successful conclusion of our Tuakana Teina Program for 2023. Throughout the year, the Tuakana Prefects have been guiding and mentoring 34 Tuakana, assisting the Teina (Year 9 students) in their transition into their first year at WEGC.
In recognition of everyone's dedication and contributions to the program, we organised a 'Year 9 Breakfast.' This breakfast was a delightful success, complete with golden hash browns, freshly toasted bread, a variety of cereals, fresh fruits, and a selection of hot beverages.
The Year 9 Breakfast was not just a lovely meal but also a heartwarming moment for all the people who have helped make the program successful. This includes the Tuakana Prefects, Tuakana, and our Kaiako: Ms Maehe, Mandy-Kay Hunt , Carina Allen , Ms Kennedy, Ms Dreaver and Ms Burns.
To celebrate the end of this program we also acknowledged everyone at an assembly, giving out certificates, badges and a farewell to Ms Kennedy. We also announced the class who won the ‘Tuakana Cup’ which was 9G.
As we bid farewell to the 2023 Tuakana Teina Program, we look forward to those continuing this wonderful programme in the years to come at WEGC and here's to the bright futures of our Teina students as they continue their journey at our school.
