Curriculum
WVSU has implemented the MATATAG Curriculum, which is the latest curriculum in the Philippines and an improvement on the K–12 system.
The MATATAG Curriculum focuses on:
Strengthening students' basic competencies, especially literacy and numeracy
Simplifying learning content to make it more focused
Deep learning rather than merely covering a wide range of material
Developing critical thinking and problem solving skills
In mathematics at the junior high school level (grades 7 – 10), the material is taught conceptually and applicationally. Students are not only encouraged to understand how to solve problems, but also to understand the reasoning and concepts behind them.
English is used as the main language of instruction, so that students become accustomed to using mathematical terms in an international context.
Teaching with the MATATAG Curriculum has been a new experience for me. I have learned to focus more on understanding concepts rather than just solving problems. This has made me more aware that the quality of learning is far more important than the quantity of material.
