7. Independent Learning

The Independent Learning module is a homework notification system that allows teachers and students to record and compile an Independent Learning checklist on each student’s VLE. Students and parents in Years 7, 8 and 9 will also receive a daily notification via ESF App at 5:30 P.M. outlining the Independent Learning set by teachers.

[Parents are required to install ESF App for further communication with ESF and SIS. For information on downloading the App, please refer to how to install ESF App.]

Independent Learning Principles

Your child may be asked to complete independent learning in their own time, which might have been called ‘homework’ in previous schools. We encourage our learners to become independent in their approach to learning beyond the classroom and to take increasing responsibility for their development during their time at SIS.

Independent learning is a chance for our learners to identify and develop effective ‘tools for learning’ and to nurture curiosity. We want our learners to identify strengths and areas for growth, and develop new skills that are challenging and will support success. We believe that independent learning extends and enriches the classroom experience, and that meaningful independent learning is purposeful, accessible and engaging.

Effective communication underpins learning and parents are welcomed as partners in supporting their children’s independent learning.

All Departments have their own policy documents that highlight expectations for students and parents. These documents highlight extension tasks and offer suggestions for supporting learning in that subject area. Parents have access to these policies through the parent iSAMS Portal.

Recording Independent Learning

Teachers of Years 7, 8, and 9 are required to record all independent learning tasks using the data hub in VLE as well as giving students time in class to record this in their Family Bauhinia Diaries. Students can then access all tasks on their VLE home page. Year 7, 8 & 9 parents are sent a daily ESF App notification that shares a copy of the the tasks set.

From Year 10 onwards, teachers are not required to use the VLE, but it can be used to support a class or individual students. Many teachers use Google Classrooms to support their teaching, and these are used to record and communicate Independent Learning tasks.

These support systems are designed to allow students to become independent and allow them to put their own organisational systems in place to organise themselves as they move through the school.
