Dialogue with community organizations and neighborhood associations about what your restaurant/hotel’s role should be in the community
Ensure that all of your staff and internal shared interest partners understand what their surrounding community members’ values are, what the neighborhood looks like, and develop relationships with the leaders of those communities
Solicit feedback from community members, visitors, etc. about your place of business and make intentional efforts to address feedback
Ensure community members are aware of potential opportunities for employment at your organization/business
Regularly audit demographics of your staff and assess if staff demographics are reflective of your immediate community
SUPPLIER & VENDOR DIVERSITY
BEST PRACTICES & RECOMMENDATIONS:
Make sure your vendor/supplier agreements and/or vetting conversations incorporates diversity, equity, and inclusion so vendors are aware of your organization’s commitment to DEI
Regularly audit the demographics of your current vendors/suppliers to ensure demographics are reflective of your organization’s goals for diversity and equity
Establish clear goals for increasing vendor/supplier representation from BIPOC-owned, women-owned, MBE vendors/suppliers
Ensure that compensation for your BIPOC, women, LGBTQIA+, and other marginalized-owned vendors is equitable (i.e. often, BIPOC and women-led vendors receive less dollars in comparison to larger, white-led vendors)
Give testimonials and recommendations for BIPOC, women, LGBTQIA-led vendors/suppliers to increase their visibility and brand awareness
Establish a supplier diversity program

Create opportunities for team members to learn more about each other’s identities and cultural backgrounds
Regularly seek input from internal and external shared interest groups on how they like their cultures and identities to be celebrated
Create a dedicated budget line item to cultural celebrations and recognitions
Offer space in your place of business to community members who may want to celebrate their cultures and traditions in their own neighborhood
Seek direct input from members of tribal nations and Indigenous communities on your land acknowledgment; compensate them directly for their labor and input
Ensure that your organization/business gives credit to the histories and origins of your traditions, recipes, events, etc.
Encourage a culture of openness and learning about identity, history, and culture with your team members
