All students are invited to join an exciting musical journey!

Activity Overview

Welcome to the start of your musical journey! The 5th Grade Band is where students take their very first steps in learning an instrument. In a supportive, fun environment, you’ll master the fundamentals of instrumental music and build skills that will carry you through middle school and beyond.

Program Expectations

• Be Prepared: Bring your instrument, binder, music, pencil, and supplies daily.

• Be Punctual: Arrive on time for 8th period lessons on your designated day. 🚨

• Be Dedicated: Practice daily for 10–15 minutes and complete your weekly practice assignments.

• Be Positive: Show respect, teamwork, and a supportive attitude.

• Strive for Excellence: Demonstrate pride, passion, and commitment to performance.

Musicianship Goals

• Produce a clear, characteristic tone.

• Master the fundamentals of your instrument.

• Build performance confidence.

• Grow as a responsible musician and teammate.

Lessons

5th grade students receive one small-group lesson within the 6-day cycle during 8th period.

* Gifted & Talented Students (Saxophone, Trumpet, Percussion): Lessons are scheduled during 6th period lunch/recess. Mrs. Graff will confirm times with you at the start of each semester.

🎷 Rentals, Materials & Supplies

Rental Information and Vendor Clarification

📌 Instrument rental agreements are executed directly through an approved third-party vendor (Cole’s Music Service), NOT West Deptford Middle School.

• School Role: The WDMS Band Program partners the Coles Music to provide on-site instrument delivery and pickup, instrument recommendations, and support families through the rental process. The school does not collect rental fees or manage rental contracts.

• Parent Role: Parents/guardians are directly responsible for executing rental contracts, payments, and return terms with Cole’s Music Service (or another reputable music retailer of your choice).

Required Materials

Every 5th-grade band student will need:

• Instrument (in good working condition)

• Method Book: Sound Innovations for Concert Band, Book 1 (for their specific instrument)

• Instrument Care Kit & Accessories (e.g., reeds, valve oil, drumsticks, swab—varies by instrument)

• Music Binder: 1-inch Band Binder with 5 labeled tab dividers

💯 Grading Policy Overview

Band is a Pass/Fail class based on participation, preparation, and attendance

(No major, minor, or supportive grades. Less Pressure)

🎺 Concert Rehearsals

Full-band rehearsals bring all instruments together to practice as an ensemble before each concert.

• When: Scheduled during 8th period as concert dates approach.

• Schedule: Rehearsals are coordinated with school officials and take the place of their regular lesson time. 

• Calendar: Mrs. Graff will send out a rehearsal schedule in advance.

🎺 Instrument Selection & Placement

1. The "Core 6" Instruments

To ensure student success, proper ensemble balance, and strong musical foundations, WDMS offers six core beginner instruments:

• Flute

• Clarinet

• Saxophone

• Trumpet

• Trombone

• Percussion

Focusing on these foundational instruments allows beginner musicians to develop proper breath control, rhythm, and reading skills before transitioning to specialized instruments in later grades.

2. The Selection Process

We want every student to play an instrument they love and can be successful playing. During the selection process:

• Students are guided through hands-on instrument tryouts to evaluate physical fit and natural comfort.

• Mrs. Graff works with each student to match their interest with physical compatibility and overall band balance.

3. Instrument Commitment

Learning an instrument takes patience and consistent effort—it is normal to face challenges in the first few months!

• Director Approval Required: Students are expected to stick with their assigned instrument for the full school year. Changing instruments requires direct discussion and approval from Mrs. Graff to ensure it is educationally appropriate and if a schedule change is possible.
