Quarter 4 Student & Parent Information
Students will read excerpts from One Well: The Story of Water on Earth to build background knowledge about where freshwater comes from and the three main issues of access to water, demands on water, and water pollution. They are focusing on finding the main ideas and supporting details, analyzing illustrations, and answering text dependent questions.
For the mid-unit assessment students will listen to a new section from One Well and determine the main ideas and supporting details. Then they will read the passage again to answer text dependent questions.
During the end of unit assessment students will read a new informational text and compare it to One Well. They will then answer text dependent questions.
Students will be reading more texts to continue to research the three main water issues. They will then compare their point of view to the author's point of view in order to write an opinion essay about the importance of conserving water.
For the mid-unit assessment students will read a new text about access to water in Australia and then answer text-dependent questions on the text, vocabulary, and also compare their opinion to that of the author.
In the end of unit assessment students will write an essay on their opinion of why we should get involved in water conservation.
Students will be using the research they have gathered to create a public service announcement (PSA). Students will analyze a PSA to generate criteria for an effective PSA, create a storyboard for their PSA, and then present their PSAs.
Due to EOG testing, the assessments for this unit may change. Teachers will update you based on where they are and what students are being required to complete.
