Quarter 1 Student & Parent Information
Quarter 1 Student & Parent Information
We will be reading several rigorous literary picture books about children in other countries and their experiences overcoming challenges to receive an education. Students will focus on finding the gist (main idea), lesson, problem, and how the characters overcome the problem in each story.
The mid-unit assessment has students participating in a discussion about the books we have read. We are evaluating their speaking & listening skills.
For the end of unit assessment students read a new literary text and answer text-dependent questions related to the text. Students also need to be able to find the lesson of the story and discuss the characters & how they overcame the main problem in the story.
Students will now be reading excerpts from My Librarian is a Camel which is an informative text about students around the world accessing education. We will be focusing on finding the main idea of each passage and writing informative paragraphs answering questions using evidence from the text.
The mid-unit assessment has students reading a new passage and answering questions about the story including the main idea.
The end of unit assessment has students writing a paragraph independently that describes the challenge and how it is overcome in one country.
We will be reading the text, More Than Anything Else, to analyze one characters challenges and how that challenge to learn to read was overcome. Students will then be writing a reading contract that details their reading challenges and how they will work to overcome those challenges this year.
For the mid-unit assessment students will write about the lesson of the story we are reading using specific evidence from the text to support their reasons.
The end of unit assessment has two parts. The first part will be recording an audiobook with their peers that assesses their reading fluency (accuracy, rate, and expression). After that, students will be revising and writing a final copy of their reading contract based on teacher & peer feedback.
The files below are titled Homework Resources, however your child's teacher will let you know exact homework each night. Please see their website for more information.
