Dr. Brackett, of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence, wrote a book entitled, “Permission to Feel,” which describes how to become an emotional scientist. It begins with why being an emotional scientist is important. Here is an excerpt from the text:
Feelings are a form of information. They’re like news reports from inside our psyches, sending messages about what’s going on inside the unique person that is each of us in response to whatever internal or external events we’re experiencing. We need to access that information and then figure out what it’s telling us. That way we can make the most informed decisions.
That’s it, in a nutshell, straight from the expert’s pen. Dr. Brackett’s understanding of emotion science is built around the follow premise: Recognize, Understand, Label, Express, Regulate (RULER). If this is interesting to you, I am happy to provide more information. Send me an email at Esulzbach@wcpss.net with questions or comments!

Happy Picture: Ask students to draw something that makes them happy (give them 5 min). This can be friends, pets, sports, meals, etc. It can be something simple or a future dream, etc. Once they are done, you can ask them to share their picture or explain what they drew (if they are comfortable). If a student says "nothing", you can push the student to think about a happy memory. Encourage kids to post this around their workstation. If you would like to continue a dialogue, here are some questions:
Why does your picture make you happy?
Why is it important to hang this near your workstation? How will this help you?
Based on everything going on in the world, how do you focus your energy on things that are going well or make you happy?
Show and Tell: Although this seems very elementary, kids LOVE to share things. This is also a great opportunity for kids to turn on their camera and build rapport with other students. You can encourage students to bring 1 item to share with peers. This could be a pet, a room in the house, an important item, something outside, etc. They share the item and explain why it is important. If you have time, you can open it for a discussion and ask kids to share comments or questions with each other.
