Course registration is an exciting time for students to select courses in order to explore interests and deepen their understanding of subject material. Our middle school courses are aligned to local, state and national standards.
Students take 6 courses each semester. Schedules for students typically include four core classes (Math, English Language Arts (ELA), Social Studies and Science), Physical Education (year-long), and one elective each semester. The majority of electives are only one semester, however some electives are year-long (these are noted in registration documents).
Selection and registration for core classes is based on teacher recommendations from the student's current core teachers. Middle school students are asked to select 4 electives (2 primary and 2 alternative choices). Some electives require a prerequisite (this means that a specific course must be completed prior to taking this higher level course).
Please note that course registration for rising 6th graders is completed by their elementary School Counselor. PHMS Counselors work collectively with elementary School Counselors in order to provide registration information specific to our school.
-Please note that families should use the course description sheets below to select the appropriate electives for their grade on PowerSchool-

*After April 1st counselors will begin to reach out to any students that did not put in any choices in hopes to help them get registered*
*Please Make Sure To Look Over The Frequently Asked Questions Below Before Entering Your Choices*
How do I enter a year-long elective when registering? When entering any of the year-long courses (Band, 8th grade Spanish, 8th grade Concert Chorus), just mark the year long elective as the only primary choice. Afterwards, still mark 2 alternative courses in the alternative electives section.
Can I join Band in 8th grade, even though I have not previously taken Band? No you may not, Band requires prerequisite knowledge.
What if I have previous knowledge in band? Speak to your counselor.
Can I apply for Spanish in 7th or 8th grade even though I have never taken it previously? No you may not, Spanish requires prerequisite knowledge.
Can I change an elective just because I changed my mind, want to join a friend, or have a teacher preference? Students are given 2 primary and 2 alternative choices and that will help guide your class placement. Adjustments will usually not be made for any of the questioned reasons.
How do I know if I entered my elective? After electives are chosen you will press submit in the lower right and receive a confirmation of your course selections. If you have not seen this, then you may have not entered your elective choices correctly. Please contact your school counselor if you would like to confirm if your choices have been correctly entered.
If I select the same primary and alternative choices, will that give me a better chance of getting into an elective? No, if anything you would be limiting yourself of an additional selection choice. Students are to select 2 different primary electives and 2 different alternative electives.
Can I apply to/or adjust my elective choices on my own? As long as the registration window is open you may. Please follow along our video above in case you are not sure how to do it.
Can I adjust my elective choices after the registration window closes? Reach out to your counselor and let them know of the adjustment to your selections. They will then confirm with you if they are able to manually adjust it.
Can I change my elective once the semester has already begun/right before it begins? Speak to your counselor. Due to the limited amount of elective teachers we have, many of the popular elective classes tend to be taken very quickly and are at capacity at the start of each semester (which is why it is important to apply to electives correctly during the registration window). This then limits our ability to make last minute elective class adjustments.
