Week 1: We learned about creativity! Students invented their own animals. They also played a game in which partners had a sheet of paper and each got to draw something, passing it back and forth, but they couldn't talk.
Week 2-3: We've talked about how our words affect other people. We did an activity with paper hearts while watching Chrysanthemum to represent how unkind words hurt others hearts. We also did an activity with toothpaste to show how once our words are out, they affect people. There are things we can do, such as apologizing and changing our actions, but our words can still leave a mark. Ask your kids about these activities so they can explain them to you!
Week 4: We focused on gratitude. We started a gratitude jar to add to daily!
Week 5: We discussed bravery! Bravery comes in many forms: moral, mental, and physical. For our game, we played "What are you doing" which is a game that requires kids to go up and act out silly things in the middle of a circle.
Week 7: We discussed kindness! Each student did a kindness challenge including actions such as giving someone a compliment, cleaning up without being asked, and inviting someone new to play at recess.
Week 8-9: We focused on how to support others. We talked about the different ways to offer support (words, actions, listening and sometimes giving someone space). Students thought about different scenarios and how they would react as the person trying to give support or as the person receiving support.
Each week, we focus on a different character trait. On Fridays, we play a game in which we can apply what we've learned.
Week 3: Curiosity (game: It isn't a, it's a__!)
Week 4: Teamwork (game: seeing how many times we could pass the ball without dropping it)
Week 5: Open-mindedness (game: closed eyed drawing for 30 seconds and trying to guess each other's picture)
Week 6: Being Present- Students practiced focusing on one sense at a time as a way to present in the moment. They sat outside and first tried to hone in on their sense of hearing. Then sight, smell, and touch.
Week 7: Perspective/ Point of View- Students made shadow art in which they saw an object's shadow in a new way. They took that shadow and made it part of their design.
Week 8: Forgiveness- The game we played is Telephone. Making mistakes in this game is very common and it's hard to get the whole message around the circle without it changing. This helped students practice forgiveness because they recognize that their classmates are going to mess up and that it's okay.
Week 9: Integrity- The game we played is red light green light. This game helps them practice their integrity because they have to be honest if they moved after red light was called.
