Unit 1: Using Numbers to Explore Our Mathematical Community

By the end of the unit students should be able to:

• I can explain that a two-digit number consists of a ten and some ones (NC.1.NBT.2)

• I can unitize ten ones into one ten. (NC.1.NBT.2)

• I can use numbers to explore our community.

• I can count to 150, starting at any number less than 150. (NC.1.NBT.1)

• I can read and write numbers to 20. (NC.1.NBT.7)

• I can use a numeral to represent the amount of objects in a group. (NC.1.NBT.7)

• I can explore my curiosities in mathematics by organizing and interpreting data.

Unit 2: Building a Conceptual Understanding of Addition and Subtraction

By the end of the unit students should be able to:

• I can use objects and drawings to represent addition and subtraction word problems within 20. (NC.1.OA.1)

• I can use number lines to add and subtract. (NC.1.OA.6)

• I can count on from the larger number to add. (NC.1.OA.6)

• I can show flexibility when working with numbers.

• I can compose and decompose numbers within 10 when adding and subtracting. (NC.1.OA.6)

• I can create equivalent but simpler or known sums are strategies to solve problems. (NC.1.OA.6)
