2020 brought an increased awareness of inequities in all systems with the Black Lives Matter Movement and the Pandemic. In response, the HGMS Equity Team began a series of Crucial Conversations for staff, as well as, a focus on creating a Student Equity Team beginning with a student book club. The book clubs were planned by the media coordinator and AIG teacher.
The collection management plan continued to focus on building a more inclusive library collection in order to promote equity and cultural competency.
A collection of ebooks and audiobooks was curated to provide access to library materials to students learning remotely and students were invited to pick up print materials from the library though a curbside service implemented in 2020.
Virtual and Physical Displays were created in the library to address current event that students were witnessing throughout the year.
The School Improvement Plan shifted priorities during the 2020-2021 school year to focus on student and family engagement as remote and hybrid learning created new challenges in keeping students and their families connected to the school.

Teacher support focused on Virtual and Hybrid Learning to provide the best instruction for our students.
Battle of the Books was conducted virtually to engage interested students.
The 2020-2021 school year has transformed much in education. I prefer to focus on the positive changes. First, teachers are MUCH more tech savvy than ever before. The focus of MTAC in the next school year will be on how to best use the knowledge that has been gained. The district has provided a tremendous amount of devices for students, so teachers will be able to continue to use and build upon the skills they have learned. Digital content creation is now much more possible, and teacher PD should support that. The library itself is reaching students in new ways. The focus on virtual resources will continue even as we return to the building. Teaching research and copyright skills is will have to be a priority as we move into the creation of digital content. The onslaught of disinformation in the past few years is also a major concern for library programs and how to best address the issue
The focus on equity must continue to drive our work. HGMS has begun to look deeply into issues of equity in our school, and there is a much greater awareness. The library collection has become more inclusive and I have become more intentional about making the space (physical and virtual) welcoming to all, but the conversations and learning must continue. I fear that politics will create roadblocks to continued progress, and libraries will have to stand firm on our commitment to equity and advocate for the rights of the socially excluded, marginalized, and underrepresented communities that we serve.
