Over the course of the 18/19 academic year, MTAC will help to promote collaboration between the media specialist and classroom teachers. The media specialist will collaborate with all subject areas in at least one lesson this school year.
Evidence & Reflection
-Convergence workshops attended by the Media Specialist that support our Curriculum & Instruction focus area: Displays R Us, EL Curriculum, Digitial Tools, Destiny Discover Collections, Curriculum & Instruction Wake Forward.
In attending department meetings, most teachers were open to collaboration which was a new concept to them. I tried to share many resources with them that could help to enhance their instruction. I have worked with the EL department extensively in working with them through developing lessons to support their curriculum. They have done book tastings on working conditions, speed dating with books on refugees and learning stations about Frederick Douglass.
I have collaborated with other subject areas as well. I have worked with 8th grade Science on research about bottled vs tap water. They used NC Wise Owl resources and researching different points of view. I worked with Health classes on using NC Wise Owl resources and teaching how to find reliable resources on nutrition topics. Social Studies classes worked on research on explorers.
I have created Curriculum Collections for different subject areas that teachers can utilize for their units of study.
Another area I focused on was fostering more interest in reading. EL classes participated in a variety of activities. They did Book Tastings where they watched book trailers and reflected on the stories. They did an Escape Room using Non Fiction Text Features. They did a Speed Dating with Books activity where they were introduced to various genres. Other activities included: Blind Date with a Book and Book March Madness.
In the future, I would like to attend the PLT meetings to be able to collaborate more in depth with their curriculum. I hope to increase collaboration with the number of Science and Social Studies classes. I hope to increase the number of teachers that I collaborate with during the next school year.
I also attended sessions at the fall and spring Convergence on Curriculum and Instruction. These sessions helped to give me ideas on different artifacts that could be used. These sessions also provided me the time to look at other media coordinators' portfolios to gain ideas.
Objective 2:
Over the course of the 2018-19 school year, the MTAC decided on several changes to the media center's space. Some of the new changes that will be implemented this year will include: new furniture through an Active Learning Grant, new shelf layout to provide better flow, more small group spaces and a self check out station for students.
There was a lot of weeding and cleaning out areas before I could begin the layout changes. I worked most of the summer in weeding out many out-of-dates books and equipment. Once the older items were out of the way, I began to shift shelves to make a different layout. Some shelves were removed from the Fiction and Nonfiction sections. A new floor plan was created by Kendra Allen. We also were able to purchase new furniture with an Active Learning Grant which arrived in January. The new floor plan allows for smaller groups settings and two classroom settings.
Overall, I feel that the students have enjoyed the new space and furniture. Students have done well with the self check out station. The media center has been utilized by students with the new morning opening & Pride Time.
