Industrial Technology - Timber is a hands-on subject that teaches students to become confident and safe users of basic woodworking tools and equipment. They will develop knowledge on selecting timber and materials, planning projects and the skills to produce quality timber projects.
All students will learn about the range of tools and machines for working with timber available in both industrial and domestic settings. Students will learn about working safely with these tools and machines. Students will learn about designing timber projects and communicating their design ideas.
The main emphasis in the Industrial Technology – Timber syllabus is on students learning to plan and produce quality timber projects. Every student will work on their own individual projects, which have in the past included a cheese board, stool, coffee table, dartboard cabinet and bedside cabinet.
Students will start Year 9 developing competent skills with hand tools such as planes and chisels. As students progress, they will learn to use a variety of power tools such as the orbital sander, biscuit joiner, wood lathe and dowelling machine. They will also learn to communicate the planning and production of their work through reports and workshop drawings.
This subject provides an excellent background for students wishing to study Industrial Technology, Design and Technology or Construction (VET) in Year 11 and 12. It greatly assists students who intend to leave after Year 10 and are seeking a career in either the building or construction industries.
The majority of student time is spent making timber projects. Almost every double period is dedicated to practical work.
Theoretical concepts and skill development are integrated into practical projects. Students learn from doing. Students are also required to produce a folio documenting the processes they use and apply Computer Aided Design to represent ideas and communicate effectively.
All units of work are based on a project in which students are to complete portfolios and practical tasks which are based on the areas of assessment outlined in the Industrial Technology Timber course outline.
Students are required to wear full school uniform with enclosed leather shoes in the workshop. Aprons and safety glasses are provided but you may choose to provide your own rated safety glasses if you choose. Those who wear glasses must wear over-glasses or certified prescription safety glasses.
Satisfactory completion of 100 or 200 hours of study in Industrial Technology - Timber during Stage 5 (Years 9 and 10) will be recorded with a grade on the student’s Record of School Achievement.
