Industrial Technology – Metal is a hands-on subject that enables students to become confident and safe users of the basic equipment used in the metal industry. Students develop knowledge and skills relating to the selection, use and application of materials, tools, machines and processes through the planning and production of quality practical projects.
In this course we will focus on five main things:
• Safety – Working safely in the workshop
• Materials – Learning about how metals are made and their different uses
• Tools – Learning about metal hand tools and plant machinery
• Processes – Relating to shaping, forming, machining and joining metals
• Industry – A look at the history of metal work and job opportunities.
The major emphasis of the Industrial Technology – Metal syllabus is on students actively planning and constructing quality practical projects. Students will learn to select and use a range of materials for individual projects over the two year period. Some of the projects may include:
Toolbox
Plumb bob
Toolmakers clamp
Hack saw
Centre punch
Metal sculpture
Toy racing car
Metalwork vice
Billycart.
Students will learn to competently and safely use a range of hand tools, power tools, computer controlled lathe and mill and other industry standard machines to assist in the construction of projects. They will also learn to produce drawings and written reports to develop and communicate ideas and information relating to projects.
This subject provides an excellent background for students wishing to study Metals and Engineering (VET), Industrial Technology or Construction (VET) in Year 11 and 12. It greatly assists students who intend to leave after Year 10 and are seeking a career in manufacturing, engineering or automotive industries.
Much of the time is spent in the workshop learning the craft of metal work. Most double periods are dedicated to practical work.
Students are required to wear full school uniform with enclosed leather shoes in the workshop. Aprons and safety glasses are provided but you may choose to provide your own rated safety glasses if you choose. Those who wear glasses must wear over-glasses or certified prescription safety glasses.
All units of work are based on projects. Students are required to complete a practical project and a portfolio based on an area of study which is specified in the Industrial Technology Metals course outline.
Students should choose this subject if they are interested in learning about the metal industry and fabricating products from metal.
Satisfactory completion of 100 or 200 hours of study in Industrial Technology - Metal during Stage 5 (Years 9 and 10) will be recorded with a grade on the student’s Record of School Achievement.
