Food Technology is a fun, interactive course in which students participate in practical activities related to the food industry. It provides students with a broad knowledge and understanding of food properties, processing, preparation and their interrelationship, nutritional considerations and consumption patterns. It addresses the importance of hygiene and safe working practices and legislation in the production of food. Students will develop food-specific skills, which can then be applied in a range of contexts enabling students to produce quality food products. It also provides students with a context through which to explore the richness, pleasure and variety food adds to life and how it contributes to both vocational and general life experiences.

You will learn food preparation skills as you make all sorts of different foods from chocolate slice to healthy burgers.
Yes you get to try the foods you make - a fun added bonus!
Students are required to wear full school uniform with enclosed leather shoes in the Food Technology room. For practical lessons a white apron is required (this can be purchased from the Uniform Shop) and students will also need to bring a tea towel and container.
The short answer is everyone! The skills you will learn and the knowledge you will acquire will be of great benefit both now and into the future as they help you understand the importance of food and how to make wise decisions to maintain good health.
You will complete three assessment tasks per year. The three tasks usually have a practical component and a research component. For example, you might be asked to research a nutritional issue and then come up with a recipe that meets the needs of this issue. Other tasks might require you to create a podcast, video or newspaper article.
Satisfactory completion of 100 or 200 hours of study in Food Technology during Stage 5 (Years 9 and 10) will be recorded with a grade on the student’s Record of School Achievement.
