The aim of this unit is to teach students more about information writing, and specifically, about the kinds of information writing that scientists are apt to do. To teach this, science instruction is folded into the writing workshop, and vice versa. During workshop time, children often divide their time between engaging in experiments and writing for the purposes that scientists write. Like many of this type of text, lab reports are a conglomerate. A portion of a lab report is a how-to or procedural text. In another portion of the lab report, the scientist uses charts and graphs to synthesize data. During the final portion of the unit, students write information books in which they aim to teach others about what they have learned.
