Today's game was so much fun! I loved putting so many of the things we have learned all year together in one class. You were excellent singers, rhythm readers, beat keepers, and sneaky pocket hiders. I hope you have a wonderful summer - I will miss you all!
Miss Buckley
A couple of weeks ago we learned all about the invisible parts of music: vibrations and sounds waves. This week we took a look at the specific shapes and patterns of different instruments when they make a sound. Can you identify a high or low note by it's sound wave? How about a loud or soft one?Â
Miss Buckley
Now that a new month is upon us, lots of fun things are coming our way too! This week we celebrated Star Wars day and Cinco de Mayo. Try practicing your listening skills and see if you can hear which rhythms are being played by imposters in the musical version of the popular game Among Us.
Miss Buckley
When we play instruments or use our voices, what we hear is caused by something invisible called sound waves. Sometimes we can feel music through vibrations. See if you remember the words to our song all about vibrations, and place your hands near your voice box to feel them!
Miss Buckley
This week we learned something new to help us learn pitch when we sing: solfege. We also learned about a new style of music from almost 350 years ago called baroque. Do you remember the name of the famous composition by composer Antonio Vivaldi? Practice your new hand signals while singing the musical scale then teach them to a friend or grownup!
Miss Buckley
So many singing soloists helped us put Mrs. Potatohead back together today. It was so fun to play our game over and over again creating different looks for Mrs. Potatohead each time. Now that you know how to sing and play the game, you can do it on your own with a group of friends and the Mr. or Mrs. Potatoheads in your classroom or at home!
Miss Buckley
There is always dancing at an Irish party, and you learned some really fun steps this week! We learned all about the costumes that Irish step dancers wear, the types of shoes they have, and even some words in the language of Ireland, Gaelic. We also did some super fun singing of a traditional Irish folk song, The Rattlin' Bog. In Irish slang, rattlin' means very good, splendid or excellent. Try dancing a jig or reel on your own at home!
Miss Buckley
We did lots of singing today! Do you remember what an anthem is? Believe it or not, you already know some anthems! Anthems can celebrate and unite people. It was great to see you all create a vocal warmup for us to prepare our voices for singing our school's anthem. Click on the PDF activities link and print out some worksheets to go along with the book we sang today, Change Sings.
Miss Buckley
Welcome back! We met many new musicians this week: Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, Ella Fitzgerald, and Mel Torme. Our new word of the week was improvisation. This means that the singer or instrumentalist makes up the parts thy perform while they are performing! It's the very essence of Jazz music. I loved hearing you all try scat singing and using nonsense words to make music. Watch the read aloud of Welcome to Jazz on your own at home to learn even more!
Miss Buckley
For the first time, we wrote our own rhythm creations! I loved seeing your knowledge of notation put down on paper. I hope you brought your worksheets home and shared them with your grownups. Try singing Everyone Can Be A Friend on your own over vacation week!Â
Miss Buckley
It was really fun singing a familiar song with you all in class. I was so glad you remembered all about our newest rhythm, Duta-Deta, and matched some Valentine's Day words to all the different notations we know! Excellent job guessing what secret rhythm your classmates played on the drum, too. Try playing the guessing game with your grown ups at home.
Miss Buckley
What an impressive class we had this week! You all had the opportnity to play solos on the drums and play in groups with your friends. We learned a brand new rhythm this week: sixteenth notes, or Duta-Deta. It's the quickest notation we know so far, and wow did you incorporate it into different rhtyhm patterns quickly. Keep practicing all the different notes you know at home!
Miss Buckley
Did you ever think you'd dance like a dragon? Today's lesson had us moving about creating different patterns in the air with our colorful scarves. See if you can find some fabric around your home and create a dragon dance with your grown ups! Share the things you have learned about celebrating Lunar New Year with your friends.
Miss Buckley
This Lunar New Year celebrates the year of the Rabbit. Today we learned the traditional New Year song, Ai Hai Yo. We all had the chance to play a new instrument today, the xylophone. Your improvising skills were awesome. Playing for your classmates while they sang for you made some beautiful music. Try singing with an orchestra recording on your own again!
Miss Buckley
Martin Luther King, Jr. was a man who wanted to spread a message of peace and justice for all. We learned about these words and assigned them rhythms to play along as we continue to practice our reading skills. Just like you can plant a seed to grow a tree, you can plant good ideas and watch them grow and spread joy and love too! Do you remember all the sign language for our new song? Try leading a friend in the call & response song about MLK!
Miss Buckley
This week we played along with another piece from The Nutcracker: Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy. We also took a field trip to New York City to see the book, The Polar Express, turned into a musical! Wouldn't it be fun to perform on stage like the kids dancing in the show? You can practice for your Broadway debut today with the song Hot Chocolate over break!
Miss Buckley
There are some songs you have heard before that actually come from famous composers that have been performed for over a hundreds years! Tchaikovsky's ballet, The Nutcracker, was first performed in 1892 and has a familiar tune. Trepak, or the Russian Dance, taught us that music can have a special form or pattern: AABA. That means certain parts repeat over and over again (A), and when it changes and we hear something new, we give it a new letter of the alphabet (B). Try dancing along to the different parts of Trepak again!
Miss Buckley
This week we added some new words to our growing sign language vocabulary. Just like when we speak and use different words to mean the same thing, we learned 3 different ways to sign the word "light." Can you explain to someone else what the words Ella Baker spoke mean? Give light, and people will find the way.
Miss Buckley
Sign language is a great way to communicate! Lots of people use it to talk every day. What are some things you are thankful to have in your life? Do you remember some of the signs for clouds, winds, birds, and stars? There are so many things to be thankful for now and all year long!
Miss Buckley
This week we got to stir up some witch's brew and show what we know about our singing and speaking voices. We also started to learn about the musical scale and some new singing syllables. Can you try to sing our falling leaves song with all the motions at home?
Miss Buckley
Learning the difference between a steady beat and a rhythm is fun when you're apple picking, just make sure no apples bop your head as they fall off the tree! Do you remember the motions we used for our friends in the old oak tree? Perform the song for a friend or family member at home this weekend!
Miss Buckley
Last week we learned about Hispanic Heritage month and a new dance from Argentina. Before the month celebrations end, this week we continued to practice some new Spanish words and a song from Mexico. Do you remember how the little chicks ask for their food? Try singing the song with the motions on your own!
Miss Buckley
Learning a new dance to perform with your class is always fun! What did you learn about the culture of the countries Argentina and Bolivia? Gather a few friends and see if you can lead the line dance around while you move to the steady beat of the music!
Miss Buckley
Have you ever met someone who can't hear? Today there are lots of ways to communicate with deaf people and to help them hear better. That was not the case 200 years ago when Beethoven started to lose his hearing. He created ways to feel the music he was writing when he couldn't hear his melodies. See if you can follow the dynamic motion of one of his famous compositions, FĂĽr Elise, all on your own!
Miss Buckley
This week we had the chance to play a special kind of drum. It could make high sounds and low sounds all by squeezing the strings on its side, kind of how we use our voice to make high and low sounds when we speak and sing! Remember the motions we used as we chanted our ladder rhyme? Try practicing the words and movements, and don't forget to repeat and end with a rest for silence!
Miss Buckley
Hi Kindergarten! It was so wonderful to meet you all this week. I had fun getting to learn your names and see your classrooms. You're already turning into excellent music readers! Can you share the names of the notes we saw in class with your grownups? Maybe you can teach them how to play Who Took the Cookies From the Cookie Jar too!
Miss Buckley
Hi Kindergarten!
This week, you will be watching the Fifth Grade Play with your classes! It's a story of kids finding a way to still perform by going online! Then, pick one of your favorite songs or lessons from this year and perform for your grownups, your stuffed animals, or virtually for someone who'd love to hear your music making skills! Try completing this bingo board over school break!
