Hi 2nd Graders!
This week, you will be watching the Fifth Grade Play with your classes! It's a story of kids finding a way to still perform by going online! Then, pick one of your favorite songs or lessons from this year and perform for your grownups, your stuffed animals, or virtually for someone who'd love to hear your music making skills!
I hope you have a great summer!
Ms. Vanaria

Hi 2nd Graders!
This week you are going to experience the music of a French composer named, Camille Saint-Saëns!
Camille Saint-Saëns was a serious composer but also liked a good joke. When his music students asked him to write a funny piece for them, he wrote The Carnival of the Animals. The composer used different instruments to sound like certain animals. Let’s listen to the music and see if you can guess what animal he was thinking about when he wrote each piece!
Print out this paper ANIMALS-IN COLOR or ANIMALS-NO COLOR or just pull it up on your screen if you can’t print.
Get a coin or something like a bingo chip. When you listen to each piece of music I want you to choose a box to put your coin on. Pick the box that you think makes sense with the music you are hearing. Which animal does it sound like? When you are done click on the answer key to see if you were correct!
After you have listened to all the tracks draw a picture of your favorite one and email it to me!
Click on each TRACK and guess what animal you think you hear!

Hi 2nd Graders!
Some second graders created a “Springtime Composition” last week! Great job!
Not everyone had a chance to complete that lesson so we would like to give you another week to do it. If you created a “Springtime Composition” last week, then please choose either “Springtime Composition #2” or “Grow A Garden Composition #1 or #2” for this week.
Here are the directions.
Click the links below and print out the paper if you can, or just draw it out yourself! You will notice that there are 8 boxes and 8 spring/garden related pictures.
Cut the pictures out and glue them in the 8 boxes in any order you'd like!
Decide which rhythm matches the picture:
Look at this example then draw the correct notes underneath each picture.
You can even come up with your own spring or garden pictures if you want.
4. Color the pictures when you are done!
5. Find an instrument to practice your composition on, and perform it for a family member!
Be creative- maybe you can use pots and pans or other things in your kitchen as an instrument!
Ask an adult for help and find something together!
I'd love to hear your creations! Feel free to email me a video of you performing your composition if you'd like or even just a picture is fine too!
Have a fantastic week!

This is a fun student example!
Hi 2nd graders!
I hope you had a chance to do something fun with your families last week!
Recently we learned about "Peter and the Wolf". We learned that there are FOUR main instrument families in an orchestra. They are Brass, Woodwind, Strings, and Percussion. We discussed the characters in "Peter and the Wolf" and learned that all of the characters are represented by different instruments!
Let's continue learning more about the story:
Watch this video by Ms. Pohl, the Happy Hollow music teacher.
* She will play a special instrument! Ms. Pohl-Instrumental
Watch the whole "Peter and the Wolf" movie! Peter and The Wolf Movie
Show what you know!
*Fill out this form and answer questions about the lessons! Peter and The Wolf Questions
I can't wait to read your responses! Have fun!
Ms. Vanaria
Hi 2nd graders!
Check out the videos below for this week's music class:
Warm-up your voice with the slide whistle video.
Watch my friend, Ms. Davis. She made a video about the story of "Peter and the Wolf." In the story, each character is represented by a different instrument. Instruments of the orchestra belong to different families. The four instrument families are Strings, Woodwinds, Brass, and Percussion. Think of some instruments. Can you guess which families they belong to?
Cool down by listening to "The Crabfish" story as it is sung.
Have fun!
