TRADEMARKS

Registering a trademark is an essential step in protecting your brand's identity and ensuring that your company name, logo, or slogan is legally safeguarded. The process of registering a trademark is relatively straightforward, and many businesses can complete the application online without the need for legal assistance.

To start the registration process, visit the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) website at www.uspto.gov. The website provides detailed instructions and resources to guide you through the application process, which typically takes less than 90 minutes.

Before you file, it’s crucial to check that your desired trademark isn't already in use. You can do this by searching the Trademark Electronic Search System database  (TESS) database available on the USPTO website. This search helps ensure that your trademark is unique within your business category, reducing the risk of your application being denied.

Another important consideration is to avoid adding domain extensions (like .com, .net, etc.) to your trademark. Adding a domain extension doesn’t provide additional protection and could allow others to register the same name with a different extension.

Once your trademark is registered, it provides legal protection, preventing others from using your brand’s identity in a way that could confuse consumers. This step is a critical part of building and maintaining a strong brand.
