Italy is a well-cultured country, located in the south of Europe. Many people recognize Italy by its boot-shape. A fun fact about Italy is they have the oldest university in Europe. They also invented espresso machines and the modern idea of banking.
Terrain-wise, Italy is separated east and south by the Alpine Range that runs through the middle of the country. It is also a peninsula, which is land surrounded by water on only three sides.
If you've ever heard of the destruction of Pompeii, you might have heard of the volcano located in Italy that caused this mass destruction. It's an active volcano called Mount Vesuvius that rises just above the Bay of Naples. To this day, people can still buy entry tickets to visit the infamous volcano that destroyed an ancient roman city.
A couple of the most famous landmarks in Italy are The Colosseum, located in Rome, and the Leaning Tower of Pisa, located in Pisa. These two tourist attractions attract more than 5 million people per year, who want to get a chance to see a piece of Italy's past.
A huge turn in Italy's history happened in the 14th century, when the Renaissance started. The Renaissance was a time period filled with permanent change for Italy's depiction of art, culture, and image of the Earth. Many famous artists had their peak during the Renaissance, such as Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael, who many people already know a lot about.
Italy is one of the world's most cultured countries. With so many famous landmarks, beautiful landscapes, and amazing cuisine, Italy makes for a wonderful vacation. Everyone should take some time to learn about Italy's many wonders, especially because many of our Watertown friends and community members have connections to this beautiful country!
