Evidence Based Grading

A More Accurate Reflection

This year, Sunrise Ridge has made the switch to a new grade reporting system. Similar to Standards Based Grading, our system of EVIDENCE BASED GRADING removes the percentage scale and points chasing of a traditional grade scale, and instead focuses on four levels of learning:

4: Beyond Proficient

3: Proficient

2: Approaching Proficiency

1: Minimal Understanding

NE: No Evidence

In a traditional grading system, students' grades were determined by averaging their scores on assignments, tests & quizzes, homework, etc. and often included factors such as behavior, late penalties, and extra credit. The average score is translated into a percentage which equates to a single letter grade for each subject.

However, in Evidence Based Grading, students are assessed based on what evidence they produce. There is no extra credit and no zero scores. Only items meant to measure achievement are recorded, so practice items such as homework would not be penalized. The grades are based on the above proficiency levels for each standard that the subject teaches. Each subject has multiple "grades" to show the student's proficiency in certain areas. The areas that will be assessed in Language Arts are:

  • Reading Informational Text

  • Reading Literature

  • Writing

  • Speaking and Listening

  • Language (grammar, usage, mechanics)

This allows the grade to more accurately reflect what skills students struggle with, and which they are proficient in, which in turn allows me as the teacher to have more personalized learning for my students and to better communicate with parents.
