Since the early part of this century, educators have used the acronym “STEM” to communicate the significance of four related disciplines: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. More recently, the term STEAM has gained popularity, honoring the vital role of art and design. Fabiola Gianotti, lead physicist with the ATLAS project at the Large Hadron Collider, affirms the relationships among these fields: “Art is based on very clear, mathematical principles like proportion and harmony. At the same time, physicists need to be inventive, to have ideas, to have some fantasy.”
