Functional description of positions

Goalkeeper: They have good, strong hands and good size. They field low balls cleanly and fields high balls with patience and at their highest point. They have good jumping ability and can time their jump. They have good reaction time and come off their line at the correct angle. They are VOCAL! They are good communicators, a good organizers, and good leaders.

 

Center Back: They are excellent communicators and have good speed. They are willing to challenge opposing forwards to win the ball aggressively and cleanly. They find the ball in the air well, can direct their headers, read the game well, pressure the ball well without diving in, cover for other teammates, are courageous, and always recover on the correct angle. They are LOUD and intimidating to other players.

 

Outside Back: They are good communicators. They have excellent speed and very good fitness. They are accurate passers and execute combination passes accurately. They can send lofted balls down the sideline and into the flank. They are not afraid to push up to offer support and become part of the attack. They find the ball in the air well. They are aggressive tacklers; they read the game well; they cover for their teammates; they recover on the correct angles; they clear the ball out of the box quickly and with power..

 

Holding Mid/Defensive Mid: They are solid, fierce, aggressive tacklers. They win many 1v1 duals and gain possession of the ball. They distribute the ball after winning possession and look to make combination plays. They are able to serve balls high, long, and accurately. They are willing to join the attack and shoot from a distance. They understand proper defensive shape when working the ball out of the back, and they cover well for teammates. They fulfill the hardest working position on the field.

 

Attacking Mid/Center Mid: They see and read the game wonderfully. They are creative players with excellent distribution. They execute one and two touch passes with either foot and are willing to aggressively join the forward striker to shoot and score. They are excellent dribblers and can support both the back and the front line on proper angles. They make mindful yet quick decisions with the ball.


Wing Forward: They have exceptional speed and endurance. They are willing to be one of the most relentless runners on the field, moving up and down the field as transition calls for movement. They can cross the ball in the air and shoot from distance. They can dribble and create space for others to run into. They move well with and without the ball and are willing to take on defenders. They consistently recover into the middle and defensive thirds to defend, anticipate passes, and win the ball back.

 

High Forward/Striker: They have breakaway speed and can move well with or without the ball to get into scoring and shooting range. They can shoot with accuracy and work well in tight spaces. They are excellent offensive headers and are willing to challenge opponents for balls in the air. Off the ball, they are always looking for the ball and support either side with their back to their attacking goal. They are mindful about staying onside and they makes good, timed runs into the box. They are extremely determined to score in every legal way. They put a ton of pressure on their opponents to win the ball high up the field.
