Walpole METCO Program

Our Walpole METCO Community Welcomes You!

Mission of the METCO Program

Our mission is to provide students with educational opportunities designed to enrich their academic, personal and interpersonal experiences. It is our belief that the METCO experience should provide a strong academic foundation, as well as an environment rich in cultural, educational, ethnic and racial diversity.

What is the METCO Program?

Founded in 1966, METCO is the METropolitan COuncil for Educational Opportunity. Currently, 33 school districts participate in welcoming thousands of Boston students each year into their learning communities dedicated to increasing diversity and reducingracial isolation.

Why was METCO created?

In 1965 during the peak of the Civil Rights Movement, a number oftowns and school districts were given the right to "help alleviate racial isolation" and "racial imbalance" by placing children who reside elsewhere in their school communities (MGL, Chapter 76 Sec 12A). Since then, METCO continues to grow its programservice 3100 families in 190 public schools annually, making METCO the largest voluntary school integration program in thenation.

METCO in Walpole

Walpole has been a partner district with METCO since 1967 and started their first year with eight students from Boston. Today, our program consists of 37 students in grades K-12. The Walpole METCO Program is committed to making sure that each METCO student finds their intellectual identities while developing the social capital necessary to expand their horizons. Enrollment is based on annual program funding, available seating, and completion of the intake process.
