Flamenco, Salsa, Tango, the Cha-cha. Unmistakable musical sounds. Savory, sweet, spicy. Food that crosses a variety of preferences. Experiences are endless when you visit the Spanish 3 room at Wallkill Valley Regional High School.
Bustling with students and good vibes alike, the room is a full blown fiesta every Thursday after school for the one and only Spanish Honor Society Club! Meetings are much anticipated and typically draw a crowd of excited estudiantes.

The Spanish Honor Society is a club dedicated to those that wish to celebrate Spanish heritage, culture, food, and talk with others who also have a love for all things Spanish! In fact, the club just recently hosted a spirit week that highlights cultural pride. Each day captured a different theme. Monday was "Mi Bandera" (My Flag), giving students and teachers an opportunity to wear the colors of an Hispanic/Latino country that represents them or one that the students celebrate.
Tuesday was "Pasion deportiva" (Passion for Sports), many students wore soccer jerseys, baseball gear, or apparel that represented a Hispanic/Latino athlete or team. Wednesday was "Celebrando las estrellas"(Celebrating the Stars), where students dressed as their favorite Hispanic/Latino star. Thursday was "Heroes y iconos" (Heroes and Icons) where students were able to wear something representing a Hispanic/Latino hero/role model. Lastly, on Friday, or "Fiesta Friday", students and teachers ended the week wearing festive or traditional Hispanic/Latino attire.
At every meeting, students sign in and choose from a plethora of snacks and drinks found at the center table. Activities and announcements are given out to those who attend. So, while students eat, they get to do fun activities and discuss with other club members some of the club's future endeavors at the same time. And while they're at it, they get to practice their Española!
Senora Hernandez is the advisor for the Spanish Honor Society and coordinates all the meetings. "Spanish Honor Society is [basically] an organization that includes students who are taking higher levels of Spanish. Students are able to come together and be part of the organization where they get to be recognized for having that particular
interest in the language."
As the Spanish 3 teacher, Senora Hernandez, hopes to bring her students together through culture, experience, and awareness. "The organization isn't only about Spanish, it's about bringing diversity and bringing everyone together. Kind of like having everybody realize that even if we're from different backgrounds, we're all valuable. Having that difference amongst all, [not even in culture, in everything] is the most important."
Senora Hernandez's ultimate goal of leading this club is for everybody to have respect for each other and to embrace everyone's differences, as well as bring awareness to everyone. "If you don't take the time to teach [respect] to students, they're not going to be able to understand it. That's one of my main goals; bringing cultural awareness to every other aspect."
Senora Hernandez wishes to expand teachings beyond the school walls. Wallkill students are very excited about the opportunity - just listen to the enthusiasm coming from room J202!
Spanish Honor Society REQUIREMENTS:
Currently enrolled in Spanish 2 or higher
Minimum grade of a 90 or above in Spanish classes
Willingness to participate and communicate with other classmates
